Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task by identifying the top ten countries for both electricity production and consumption in 2014, and makes relevant comparisons between them. Key features, such as China ranking highest and Korea lowest, are correctly pointed out. However, the data reporting is somewhat mechanical and lists numerous statistics without always synthesizing the broader trends or making the comparisons as clear as they could be. For instance, the phrasing "Russia, Japan and India manufacture and expenditure in electricity below 10,000 billion kwh" contains a factual inaccuracy regarding the scale of the figures (as the actual chart figures are in the hundreds or thousands of billion kWh, and 10,000 is incorrect). Overall, the task is addressed adequately, but the data handling and synthesis prevent it from reaching a higher band. Band score: 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific countries, which gives the text an overall structure. However, progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and disjointed grouping of data. Phrases like "In detail" and "In case of" are used mechanically, and referencing is sometimes unclear, such as "usage in same nation." Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of countries feels somewhat random rather than following a clear geographical or logical hierarchy. Cohesive devices are either overused or inadequate, creating a choppy reading experience. Although the response has a discernible beginning, middle, and end, the overall flow lacks smoothness and clear logical progression. Band score: 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The student demonstrates a limited and repetitive range of vocabulary, relying heavily on basic terms like "generate," "consumption," "produce," and "usage." There are noticeable word-form and collocation errors throughout the text, such as "the generate and consumption," "highest manufacturing and utilized electricity," and "expenditure in electricity." These lexical inaccuracies cause some difficulty for the reader and reveal a lack of control over appropriate academic register and phrasing. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic of electricity production and consumption, the frequency of word-choice errors restricts the lexical score. Band score: 4.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response contains a very limited range of grammatical structures, with frequent and severe errors in almost every sentence. Simple sentences are often malformed, and attempts at complex or compound structures result in ungrammatical clauses, such as "while the lowest making and usage of electricity in korea" (missing verb and capitalization) and "5,398 billion kwh electricity generate in China" (missing auxiliary verb and passive voice). Subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, and prepositions are frequently mishandled. These persistent grammatical errors cause significant strain for the reader and heavily impede clear communication of the data. Band score: 4.0.
