Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully covers all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of the bar chart and selecting and reporting the main features regarding electricity production and consumption in 2014. Key comparisons are made effectively, such as identifying China and the United States as the top producers and consumers, and highlighting Germany as the sole country where consumption exceeded production. Specific data points, such as China at '5398 billion kwh' and the United States at '4099 billion kwh', are integrated well to support the summary. The overview is clearly stated in the second paragraph, capturing the main global trends. The response meets all task achievement requirements comprehensively without major omissions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response exhibits clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped logically, starting with a general overview, followed by the top two countries, and concluding with the remaining nations. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct groups of data. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Among the remaining countries', and 'compared with' are employed effectively to link ideas, although there are minor mechanical issues such as missing spaces after periods (e.g., 'consumption. The figures' and 'electricty.in most countries'). Despite these minor punctuation flaws, the overall progression of information remains easy to follow and coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully utilizing terms like 'produced', 'consumed', 'exceeded', and 'generated'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and appropriate topic-specific language regarding energy statistics. However, there are several typographical and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'lWh' instead of 'kWh', 'china' and 'gwermany' with lowercase letters, and 'electricty'. While these lexical and spelling errors do not impede communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands. A slightly wider variety of synonyms for 'produced' and 'consumed' would also enhance the lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and comparative structures effectively (e.g., 'while germany was the only country where consumption exceeded production' and 'canada generated 618.9 billion kwh, compared with 499.9 billion kwh of consumption'). There are some grammatical and punctuation errors, notably missing capitalization at the beginning of sentences and for proper nouns (e.g., 'china', 'gwermany', 'the united states'), as well as spacing errors after full stops. Nevertheless, the majority of sentences are grammatically sound, and the errors rarely impede communication, demonstrating a solid control over basic and intermediate sentence forms.
