Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The student attempts to address the task by reporting information from the bar chart regarding electricity production and consumption in 2014. However, the response falls short of fully satisfying the requirements for a higher band due to numerous inaccuracies in data reporting, missing key comparisons, and poor overall organisation. For instance, the student states that India used 'nearly 7 billion (KWh)' in 2014, whereas the chart clearly shows consumption at nearly 698.8 billion kWh, representing a massive misreading of the data. Furthermore, while the top countries like China and the United States are mentioned, the lack of a clear, coherent overview and the presence of severe data distortions mean the response only partially addresses the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The essay lacks clear logical organisation and progression. The response begins with a fragmented introduction and an uncapitalised transition into the body paragraphs ("overall it is visible..."). Paragraphing is poorly controlled, with dense, rambling sentences that merge multiple ideas together without clear signposting or logical sequencing. Cohesive devices are either missing, misused, or confused (e.g., using 'Thou' incorrectly or repeating 'we have' excessively). Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of information across the text. Overall cohesion is faulty and mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The lexical resource displayed is severely limited and contains an extremely high frequency of spelling errors and typographical mistakes throughout the text (e.g., 'chahina', 'china', 'plac', 'consuy', 'prod', 'almot', 'alme', 'firth', 'posi', 'bing', 'indic', 'enery', 'ratig', 'canacla', 'rakgity', 'kore', 'blly'). The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, heavily relying on informal conversational phrases ('we have', 'with a little left to spare') rather than precise academic register. These pervasive errors and the lack of a flexible lexical range significantly impede communication and strain the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of poorly constructed simple sentences and failed attempts at complex structures. There are persistent, fundamental errors in sentence structure, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and missing verbs (e.g., 'not a very big gap in electricity generated...', 'how much electricity generated and used for between many countries'). Punctuation is largely neglected, with missing capitalisation at the beginning of sentences and proper nouns. The frequency of grammatical errors distorts meaning and causes severe difficulty for the reader throughout the response.
