Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the chart showing the top ten countries for electricity production and consumption in 2014 by identifying key data points, such as China ranking first and Germany being the exception where consumption exceeded production. However, the response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, standing at 139 words. Furthermore, there are noticeable inaccuracies in data interpretation, such as the claim that China's production was 'ten times more than the production of Korea' (5,398 compared to 485.1 is roughly eleven times, but the phrasing and comparative scope lack thorough development), and a sweeping generalization about production figures under 1,000 kWh that overlooks specific nuances. The lack of a clear, fully developed overview and failure to reach the length requirement places this criterion firmly at band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into short paragraphs, but the organization and progression are disjointed. The opening paragraph is a single sentence introduction, followed by very brief, choppy paragraphs that lack smooth logical transitions. Cohesive devices are either missing, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as using 'accept' instead of 'except' repeatedly. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall structural flow feels abrupt and mechanical, preventing the ideas from being clearly linked together. This level of paragraphing and cohesion aligns with a band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited, basic vocabulary appropriate for describing general trends, using terms like 'production', 'consumption', 'rank', and 'countries'. However, there are frequent word choice errors and confusions, most notably spelling and usage errors such as 'there usage' instead of 'their usage', 'then' instead of 'than', and 'accept' instead of 'except'. These lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies cause some distraction and restrict the range of vocabulary to a minimally adequate level, warranting a band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writing relies heavily on simple sentence structures alongside very basic attempts at complex sentences, many of which contain grammatical errors. Examples include 'All the ten countries made more electricity then there consumption accept germany', 'All the countries having less then of 1000kWh', and 'germany consume more energy according with there production which may seperate it then others'. Errors involving subject-verb agreement ('countries having'), tense/form inconsistencies, prepositions, and punctuation are frequent and can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. This performance reflects a band 5.0.
