IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates information about the energy supply generation and utilisation in top ten nations China , United States , Russia , Japan ,India , Canada , France , Brazil , Germany , korea during the year 2014.
Almost all the countries had Greater production than consumption except germany in which the demand was nore than the supply .The highest production and consumption was seen in China during 2014. On the other hand the lowest was seen in korea.
Moving further United States stood after
China in terms of production and consumption which was about 4099 and 3866 respectively. After that Russia had almost same demand and supply.
India had somewhat greater production than consumption with respect to other countries which was 871 and approximately 698 .After that France and Brazil had almost same values of power supply consumption and production . If we talk about one exception than it should be Germany which has lower production than consumption that was 526 and 586 approximately . Then the lowest of all was korea interms of demand and supply .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student covers all parts of the task by identifying the top ten countries and making relevant comparisons between electricity production and consumption. An overview is present, noting that production generally exceeded consumption with the exception of Germany. Key features are selected, such as China having the highest figures and Korea the lowest, and specific data points (e.g., 4,099 and 3,866 for the United States) are accurately cited from the prompt. However, some comparisons are described vaguely ('almost same demand and supply'), and the structure lacks full development in grouping the data logically, staying mostly at a superficial descriptive level. Despite these minor limitations, all core requirements of Academic Task 1 are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement and follows a logical sequence from China down to Korea. Paragraphing is attempted, though the transitions between paragraphs are somewhat abrupt and mechanical (e.g., 'Moving further', 'After that'). Cohesive devices are used, but referencing is occasionally imprecise, and punctuation issues interfere with smooth flow. While the progression is generally discernible, the lack of sophisticated cohesive links and awkward sentence grouping prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Paragraph breaks are also underutilised, leading to a somewhat cramped visual structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully employing terms related to the prompt such as 'production', 'consumption', 'demand', and 'supply'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but word choice and collocation are occasionally awkward, such as 'energy supply generation and utilisation' and 'greater production than consumption'. Spelling and word-formation errors occur (e.g., 'germany', 'korea', 'interms', 'nore'), and repetition of simple phrases ('almost same', 'lowest of all') limits the lexical range. Overall, the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are numerous punctuation and capitalisation errors throughout the text, including missing spaces before commas and failure to capitalise proper nouns like 'germany', 'korea', and 'india'. Complex structures are often prone to errors or awkward phrasing, such as 'except germany in which the demand was nore than the supply' and 'which has lower production than consumption that was 526 and 586 approximately'. While simple sentences are generally understandable, frequent grammatical slips and punctuation lapses restrict the range and accuracy.
