Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart shares the data of electrical energy production and consumption of multiple countries for year 2014.
China is the largest consumer as well as producer of energy in 2014 , whereas Republic of Korea is the smallest.
China produced around 5,398 billion kWh of energy and utilised the almost all the energy in the year 2014. This number is follwed by United States which generated 4,099 billion kWh of electricity that was almost totally consumed.
There is a signifiant decline in the amount of elctricity generation and consumption for rest of the countries which is equal or less than 1000 billion kWh of energy.
Among all the others, Germany is the only country where a reverse trend is observed that is the consumption exceeds the electricity production of the nation. It is also the second smallest producer of electricity.
The 2 countries which which produce the lowest amount of electricity are Germany and Republic of Korea .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of the data and reporting main features from the bar chart. Key features such as China and the United States being the highest producers and consumers are highlighted accurately using figures from the text (e.g., China produced around 5,398 billion kWh). Comparisons are made between countries, noting that the rest of the nations produce 1,000 billion kWh or less. The observation regarding Germany having a reverse trend where consumption exceeds production is correctly identified. However, there are minor inaccuracies in ranking claims towards the end, such as stating Germany and Republic of Korea produce the lowest amount, whereas Korea actually produces 485.1 while other nations have higher or lower figures depending on the full set, though Korea is tenth. Overall, the task is well handled, fitting the Band 6.5 to 7.0 criteria.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. The writer starts with an introductory sentence outlining the purpose of the bar chart, follows with key country highlights, and groups remaining nations together. Paragraphing is used to separate ideas, though some paragraphs are quite brief or single sentences. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'whereas', 'This number is followed by', and 'Among all the others', though some links feel slightly repetitive or mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, with terms like 'This number' pointing back effectively. The logical flow is maintained throughout, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, including terms like 'electrical energy production', 'consumer', 'utilised', and 'reverse trend'. There are some successful attempts at less common vocabulary ('signifiant' [significant], 'exceeds'). However, there are notable spelling errors ('follwed' for followed, 'signifiant' for significant) and slight lexical inaccuracies ('utilised the almost all the energy'). While communication is never impeded, these slips and the limited variety of sophisticated academic vocabulary keep the lexical range at a competent Band 6.0 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses and comparative structures ('China is the largest consumer as well as producer of energy... whereas Republic of Korea is the smallest'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'shares the data ... for year 2014', missing articles ('the Republic of Korea'), and prepositions ('utilised the almost all'). Another error includes 'The 2 countries which which produce', featuring a duplicated word. While these errors occur frequently, they rarely impede communication, allowing the response to comfortably secure a Band 6.0 for grammar.
