Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of electricity production and consumption in 2014 across the ten specified countries. An appropriate overview is provided, highlighting China as the highest producer and consumer, Korea, Rep. as the lowest, and noting the exception where Germany's consumption surpasses its generation. Key figures are accurately cited, such as China's 5,398 billion kWh production and the United States' figures. However, there are minor data grouping issues towards the end, such as grouping Japan, India, and Canada within '500 to 1000 billion kWh' while Canada's production is actually 618.9 and consumption is 499.9 (consumption is below 500). Despite this slight miscategorisation, the response clearly addresses the prompt and presents well-selected data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organised with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs that break down the data effectively. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader, as seen with phrases like 'Overall,' 'To begin with,' and 'Moreover.' However, paragraphing and referencing can be slightly improved. For instance, the transition into the final paragraph feels abrupt, and the reference 'The following countries, such as Japan, India, canada produces adn uses' contains awkward phrasing that disrupts the logical flow. Paragraphing is present and appropriate, but the overall cohesion leans slightly mechanical in places.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, incorporating terms like 'supply,' 'demand,' 'generation,' 'utilised,' and 'produces.' There are, however, some lexical and spelling errors that detract from the quality, such as 'canada' (uncapitalized) and 'adn' (typographical error for 'and'). Furthermore, expressions like 'the utilisation is higher than the generation' are understood but could be expressed with greater lexical variety and precision. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey the intended information, but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as introductory subordinate clauses ('As the given bar chart illustrates...') and compound sentences joined by conjunctions. There are several grammatical errors and typos, notably subject-verb agreement issues in 'canada produces adn uses' where plural verbs or coordinate structures fail. Additionally, articles and prepositions are occasionally awkward, such as 'in 2014 is in China'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the score from reaching a higher band.
