IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar graph depicts the electricty consumption and production of ten top ranked countries (China, United States, Russia , Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany, and Republic of Korea) for the year 2014, represented in the unit billion KWh .

Overall, the energy consumption and generation varied among all countries. However, the two top ranked countries highly produced and consumed the electricty, while the Republic of Korea showed the opposite trend.

China has recorded the highest consumption of 5322 KWh of it's total produced electricity of 5398KWh. Similarly, the U.S followed it closely with total power generation 4099 KWh, consuming 3866 KWh. While Russia has recorded a little change in both generation and consumption.

In the contrast, Germany ranked at number 9 recorded the more consumption with respect tp the power generated, 526 and 582 respectively. And the Republic of Korea remained the lowest contributor, generating 485 Kwh and consuming 449 Kwh.

While the remaining countries showed the fluctuation over the period

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview and selecting key features from the chart, such as China and the United States leading in both production and consumption, alongside specific data points like China's 5398 KWh production. The overview captures the main trends adequately, noting the variation across countries and highlighting opposing extremes like the Republic of Korea. However, the closing sentence contains a minor overgeneralisation about the remaining countries showing fluctuation over the period, when the data represents a single snapshot in 2014 rather than a time series. Overall, the content covers the required elements well and satisfies the criteria for this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is logically organised with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs that address specific countries and groupings. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different comparisons. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Similarly', 'While', and 'In the contrast'. However, some cohesive links and referencing feel slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'consuming 3866 KWh. While Russia has recorded a little change', which fragments sentence structures unnecessarily. Progression is generally clear, though paragraph transitions could be smoother to achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items related to data reporting such as 'electricty consumption', 'energy generation', and 'highest consumption'. There are several spelling and word-choice inaccuracies, including 'electricty' (misspelled multiple times), 'it's' instead of 'its', 'with respect tp', and awkward phrasing like 'a little change in both generation and consumption'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a Band 6 level where vocabulary control lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with relative clauses and participial phrases attempted (e.g., 'represented in the unit billion KWh', 'generating 485 Kwh and consuming 449 Kwh'). There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including missing prepositions, tense inconsistencies ('has recorded' versus past simple actions), and incorrect article usage. For instance, 'Germany ranked at number 9 recorded the more consumption' contains multiple errors. Nevertheless, the meaning remains clear, and simple sentences are generally well-controlled.
