Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the chart well by identifying the top countries for electricity production and consumption in 2014, specifically highlighting China and the United States as the clear leaders, alongside referencing the general downward trend for the remaining nations. However, there are some inaccuracies and omissions in the data reporting; for instance, the writer claims that Russia and Brazil have the same ratio of production and consumption, which misinterprets the figures (Russia is over 1,000 billion kWh while Brazil is around 500 billion kWh), and the US consumption figure is omitted entirely. Despite these data misinterpretations, the key overview is present, placing the response at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a logical overall arrangement with an introductory paragraph, an overview, and body paragraphs that attempt to detail the data. However, paragraphing and cohesion are somewhat mechanical and awkward. Expressions like 'Scrutinizing deeper into the obtainable information' and 'Hereby, I conclude my report' are unnatural and overly formulaic for an Academic Task 1 response. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the progression of ideas becomes repetitive with phrases like 'Digging deeper into the obtainable information' introducing the fourth paragraph. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate, leading to a disjointed flow in places, which aligns with the Band 5.5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with domain-specific terms such as 'production', 'consumption', and 'billion kWh' used appropriately. However, there are notable word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'conumption' (spelling error), 'took place on the first ranked', and 'got second ranked'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary phrases like 'elucidated by', but these are often clumsy or inaccurate. Repetitive phrasing ('production and consumption of electricity') further limits the lexical range. Overall, the vocabulary demonstrates sufficient control for basic task communication but contains frequent minor inaccuracies, fitting a Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several structural errors, such as 'were have same ratio', missing articles ('took place on the first ranked'), and awkward prepositional usage ('from Russia to Korea went down'). Punctuation and phrasing in complex sentences frequently become faulty, such as the dangling clause 'While from Russia to Brazil the production and consumption... respectively in 2014' which lacks a main clause connection. While these errors do not completely obscure the overall meaning, their frequency prevents the writing from achieving a higher band score.
