The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar chart compares the production and consumption of electricity in the top ten electricity-producing countries in 2014, measured in billion kWh.

Overall, China and the United States produced and consumed considerably more electricity than the other countries. China had the highest figures for both production and consumption, while Germany was the only country where electricity consumption was higher than production.

China produced 5,398 billion kWh of electricity and consumed 5,322 billion kWh. The United States ranked second, with production of 4,099 billion kWh and consumption of 3,866 billion kWh. There was then a large gap between these two countries and Russia, which produced 1,057 billion kWh and consumed 1,038 billion kWh.

Among the remaining countries, Japan ranked fourth, producing 936.2 billion kWh and consuming 856.7 billion kWh. India followed, with production of 871 billion kWh and consumption of 698.8 billion kWh Canada, France, Brazil and South Korea also produced more electricity than they consumed. Their production figures ranged from 618.9 billion kWh in Canada to 485.1 billion kWh in South Korea.

Germany was slightly different from the other countries. It produced 526.6 billion kWh, but its consumption was higher at 582.5 billion kWh Overall, the figures show that most of the countries had relatively similar production and consumption levels, although the difference was more noticeable in countries such as the United States, India and Canada.
