Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and trends of the top ten countries for electricity production and consumption in 2014. An appropriate overall trend is provided, correctly noting that production generally exceeded consumption in almost all countries, with Germany being the sole exception. Key data points are accurately cited from the chart, such as China leading with 5,398 billion kWh of production and the United States following at 4,099 billion kWh. Comparisons between production and consumption are made effectively across multiple countries, fulfilling the requirements for Task Achievement at a Band 7 level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organized into a clear introductory paragraph, an overview, and body paragraphs that group data logically. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'In 2014', 'in addition', 'morever', and 'In contrast'. However, paragraphing is somewhat hindered by the lack of capitalization at the beginning of sentences ('germany', 'the consumption', 'morever') and poor punctuation formatting, which makes the mechanical flow slightly clunky. Progression is generally logical, moving from the highest producers down to the lower ones, which earns a solid Band 6.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying numerical data and comparative relationships using terms like 'production', 'consumption', 'highest', and 'lowest'. The student attempts some less common phrasing like 'minor differance' and 'follow the same trend'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('differance', 'folow', 'germany' uncapitalized) and awkward word choices ('is increased than the consumption'). Because these lexical errors do not impede communication, the performance aligns well with Band 6 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Overall, it is clear that production in billion kWh is increased than the consumption...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense and voice misuse ('is increased than'), subject-verb agreement issues ('consumption of the germany is... production is'), and systemic punctuation and capitalization neglect at the beginning of sentences. These errors occasionally disrupt the reading flow, preventing the score from reaching a higher band.
