Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student covers the main features of the chart well by identifying the top producer and consumer (China) as well as the lower-ranking countries like South Korea. Key figures such as China's production of 5,398 billion kWh are correctly cited, and general comparisons are made between production and consumption. However, the overview is somewhat simplistic, and the student omits key overarching trends, such as the general rule that production exceeds consumption for most nations (with the notable exception of Germany). While all parts of the task are addressed, the development of ideas remains basic, leading to a Band 6.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is organized into four paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the data. Cohesive devices and transition markers such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition to this' are used to structure the text. However, paragraphing is somewhat erratic—the overview is awkwardly combined with the introductory sentence, and the progression within body paragraphs becomes dense and mechanical. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the abrupt transition to Russia and the awkward phrasing regarding Germany and South Korea. Therefore, a Band 5.5 is appropriate.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with domain-specific terms like 'production', 'consumption', 'generation', and 'billion kWh' included. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'peaticular' instead of 'particular', 'manage to produced' instead of 'managed to produce', 'consuption', 'adittion', and 'korea rep build'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and these frequent inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching Band 6.0, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are frequently marred by basic grammatical errors. Issues include tense inconsistency ('manage to produced', 'korea rep build'), punctuation errors (misplaced commas, missing capital letters for proper nouns like 'china', 'japan', 'france'), and incomplete phrasing. Although the meaning remains generally understandable, the frequency of grammatical and mechanical errors means the majority of sentences are not error-free, capping the score at Band 5.0.
