Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the chart, specifically highlighting the dominance of China and the United States compared to the other nations, as well as noting the lowest figures for Korea. Data is incorporated effectively to support the description, such as citing China's production of '5398 (billion kwh)' and consumption of '5322 (billion kwh)'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in reporting specific details, such as miscalculating or generalizing differences ('around 118 millions of differences'). The overview is somewhat basic but captures the overarching trends. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task adequately, placing it firmly at a band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by an overview, and then body paragraphs detailing specific country data. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'whereas', 'However', and 'In contrast'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in awkward transitions like 'With the production of 871 around only 698.8 billions of consumption was proceed'. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate, but the internal progression within body paragraphs occasionally feels disjointed. This level of organisation aligns with a band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student attempts a range of vocabulary relevant to the task, including terms like 'production', 'consumption', 'ranking', and 'dominance'. However, there are frequent spelling errors and word-form inaccuracies, such as 'proudction' instead of production, 'consumotion' instead of consumption, 'successfull' with a double 'l', and 'proceed' used incorrectly instead of processed. Less common vocabulary is attempted but often marred by inappropriate collocations or spelling slips, which restricts the lexical score to a 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing subordinating conjunctions like 'whereas' and 'although'. However, there are numerous grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, such as missing prepositions, awkward passive constructions ('consumption was proceed'), and incorrect article usage ('the higher ranked top 10 countries'). Punctuation around parentheses is also occasionally flawed. While these errors do not completely impede communication, their frequency prevents the text from achieving a higher band, making a 5.0 appropriate.
