IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart compares the top ten countries globally in terms of the their electricity production and consumption during the year 2014. Across all the ten countries, China led with a highest production rate and their consumption of electricity is also near to the production they made in that year. China is known as the largest country in the world in terms of infrastructure, importing goods, making new products, factories and much more. This is the reason China is producing more electricity.

United States ranked second at that time in respect of electricity. The chart shows that their consumption was 3,866 kWh however the generated power ended up at 4,099 kWh. Russia and Japan, renowned for having more Information technology parks. In 2014, both countries generated around 1,100 kWh which is not a good number as compared to United States and China. Remaining countries have not even reached to 1,000 kWh, proving they produced less electricity and their consumption was not that much high as compared to the top four countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response covers some parts of the task by identifying China and the United States as the top producers and consumers. However, it fails to present a clear overall overview of the data and misses comparisons across the rest of the ten countries. Furthermore, the student introduces outside, irrelevant personal knowledge and generalisations about why China produces more electricity and mentions 'Information technology parks' for Russia and Japan, which are not present in the source chart. Data is also misquoted or misinterpreted in places, such as claiming Russia and Japan generated around 1,100 kWh when the chart shows 1,057 and 936.2 billion kWh respectively. This places the response at band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is divided into paragraphs, which helps establish a basic structure. However, logical progression is hindered by unsupported external commentary and abrupt transitions between ideas. Cohesive devices are basic and repetitive ('Across all the ten countries', 'This is the reason', 'The chart shows that'), and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'their consumption was 3,866 kWh however the generated power ended up at 4,099 kWh' where the subject switches abruptly. Paragraphing could be much better utilised to separate the overview, the top countries, and the remaining data. This corresponds to a band 5.0 for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task with some attempts at less common phrasing such as 'production rate', 'infrastructure', and 'renowned for'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'near to the production they made', 'consumption was not that much high', and missing prepositions ('production and consumption of electricity'). Spelling is generally acceptable, but the range of vocabulary remains limited and repetitive, preventing the response from reaching a higher band. This is indicative of a band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The bar chart compares the top ten countries globally in terms of the their electricity production and consumption...' and 'Russia and Japan, renowned for having more Information technology parks.' However, the latter is a sentence fragment lacking a main verb. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout, including article misuse ('with a highest production rate'), pronoun agreement issues ('China led... and their consumption'), and missing verbs. Despite these errors, meaning is generally conveyed, placing the response at a band 5.0.
