Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the task by reporting information from the chart, but it does so only partially. While the main features are touched upon, such as identifying China as the top country for both production and consumption, key data points are inaccurate or poorly presented. For example, the student writes that China produced '5398 billion electricity' omitting the proper unit and making similar errors throughout, such as stating America is at the second number and mistakenly copying consumption figures directly from production figures in the final paragraph. The overview is very basic, and overall the response lacks a fully developed reporting of the comparative data, keeping it at a restricted level of achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation evident in the structure, separating the introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to production and consumption. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is hindered by repetitive phrasing and inadequate cohesive devices. Transitional phrases like 'In the term of production' and 'In term of consumption' are used mechanically, and referencing becomes faulty in the final paragraph where the student simply claims that consumption figures and rankings are 'same as they witten', rather than accurately summarising the data shown in the visual prompt. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs remains weak.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'bar chat' instead of chart, 'in the term of production' instead of in terms of production, and referring to the United States as 'American'. The student also struggles with precise terminology regarding electricity units, writing '5398 billion electricity' instead of billion kilowatt-hours. Repetition of basic verbs like 'produce' and 'consumed' is frequent, and spelling or phrasing inaccuracies cause some difficulty for the reader in grasping the precise details of the data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic subject-verb-object patterns. Attempts at complex sentences or comparative structures are often faulty, as seen in awkward phrasing like 'China was the one of the country which produce and consume most of the electricity as compare to others'. Frequent errors occur in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'France and Brazil was slightly same which produces'), and articles. These frequent grammatical errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader, though the core meaning of the comparisons can generally be deciphered.
