Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the chart, successfully identifying the top ten countries and making relevant comparisons. An overview is present, noting that production exceeded consumption in most countries except Germany, and highlighting China and the United States as outliers. However, some parts of the task are developed more fully than others; for instance, the details for several countries are crammed together in the final paragraph with some minor omissions and inaccuracies, such as missing China's consumption figure completely. To reach higher bands, all data points should be reported with complete accuracy and clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents an overall coherent arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the data logically, starting with an introduction and overview, moving to the top two countries, and grouping the remaining nations. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty and mechanical, with run-on sentences and a lack of smooth transitions between ideas in the final paragraph. Paragraphing is used, but the final paragraph is dense and difficult to follow due to poor punctuation and grouping. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as abrupt shifts between countries. To improve, the writer needs to use more flexible cohesive devices and clearer paragraph breaks for distinct groups of data.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying numerical data and comparative concepts such as 'leading', 'producing', and 'consuming'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and appropriate units ('billion kWh'), but these are accompanied by some word-choice and spelling errors, such as 'electricty', 'billons', 'remaing', 'serverl', and 'againts'. Fortunately, these errors do not impede communication. Spelling and minor word-form issues prevent the response from achieving a higher band. To progress further, the student should ensure greater accuracy in spelling and expand their range of functional synonyms to describe data trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Overall production exceeded consumption in nine of the ten countries with germany being the only exception.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing capitalization ('germany', 'united states', 'india', 'canada'), missing verbs or fragments ('and consuming billion (kWh)'), run-on sentences, and incorrect prepositions. However, these errors rarely impede communication, keeping the grammar performance steady at this level. To achieve a higher band, the student must increase the frequency of error-free sentences and exercise tighter control over punctuation and capitalization.
