Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the overview attempts to summarise the main features by identifying China and Korea, Rep., the selection of details is inadequate and confusing. For instance, the statement that 'Russia and US have major difference in production and consumption of electricity, around 3000 billion kWh' is factually incorrect and misreads the data from the chart (where Russia's production and consumption are around 1,000 billion kWh, and the US figures are around 4,000 billion kWh). Furthermore, some details are inaccurate, such as stating that Russia is the country where production and consumption are 'nearly equal' when several other countries show much smaller numerical gaps, and describing Korea as the 'least country' rather than ranking tenth. To reach a higher level, the response must accurately report and compare the figures without significant factual errors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation, with an introductory paragraph, an overview, and body paragraphs grouping the data, but there is no clear overall progression. The use of cohesive devices is repetitive and mechanical, relying heavily on transitional words like 'However', 'Whilst', and sequential markers like 'Second country' and 'Third country'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information is disjointed; for example, the second body paragraph awkwardly mixes comparisons of China, the US, and Russia with a brief mention of Japan and India without detailing their figures. Referencing and logical transitions between sentences are sometimes faulty, leading to a choppy reading experience. To improve, the writer needs to ensure logical links between ideas and structure the comparison of countries more fluently.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The lexical range is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer uses basic vocabulary related to the chart, such as 'production', 'consumption', 'country', and numbers. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as 'differnce' (difference), 'arround' (around), 'contries' (countries), and 'electicity' (electricity). Additionally, awkward phrasing like 'least country' instead of 'country with the lowest production' or 'the country which production and consumption nearly equal' demonstrates a lack of precision. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, use less common terms accurately, and eliminate spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors. Attempts at complex or comparative sentences are often faulty, such as 'Whilst, Korea, Rep. is least country in the production' (fragmented clause and missing article) and 'Germany produce and consume more electicity' (subject-verb agreement error with third-person singular). There are frequent errors in verb forms, articles, prepositions, and punctuation that cause difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures while improving grammatical accuracy, particularly regarding verb agreement and article usage.
