Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response presents an overview with main trends, such as noting that China and the United States had the highest levels of production and consumption while South Korea recorded the lowest. However, the details provided in the body paragraphs are limited and mechanical, listing figures sequentially without a fully developed analytical overview. Furthermore, there are several minor inaccuracies in the data reporting, such as switching units to million KWH in places and misstating Germany's production and consumption figures. These limitations mean the task is addressed only partially, reflecting a partial coverage of the requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organized into paragraphs, beginning with an introduction and a clear overall summary. However, the progression between sentences lacks smoothness, with abrupt transitions such as 'Then, the United States was seconded largest use' and awkward mechanical sequencing of the remaining countries. Cohesive devices are used repetitively or inaccurately, and referencing is occasionally unclear, which disrupts the flow of information and prevents the development of a fully logical progression throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic information about electricity production and consumption. However, the range is limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word forms, such as 'seconded largest use', 'producing and consumption', and 'sightly increased'. These lexical inadequacies and occasional spelling or form errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher level of precision and stylistic variety.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many of the complex structures are faulty or awkwardly phrased, such as 'The The india in which production was at 871 billion and Consumption drop at 698.8 billion KWH' and 'Canada which was only at 618.9... was at 6 rank'. Frequent errors in verb tenses, articles, prepositions, and sentence construction occur throughout the text, causing occasional difficulty for the reader and demonstrating limited control over grammatical accuracy.
