Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying the top ten countries and making relevant comparisons between electricity production and consumption in 2014. An overall trend is provided, noting China's dominance and the sharp decline following the USA. However, some areas are under-developed or lack precision. For instance, the description of the middle-ranking countries is disjointed and vague, stating that 'the countries in mid from top 3 to top 9 has musch less generation and consumption' without fully detailing key features or grouping data effectively. Key figures are correctly cited for the extremes, such as China at 5398 billion kWh and Korea at 485.1 billion kWh, fulfilling the requirements for this band level where relevant main features are selected even if some details remain underdeveloped.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. Information is logically sequenced from the top producers down to the lowest. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, and referencing is occasionally unclear. For example, the transition into the final paragraph is abrupt and grammatically fragmented ('Other countries like Japan , India, Canada, France ,Brazil ,Germany and Korea,From these countries only 4 has usage...'). Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within the second body paragraph breaks down due to run-on phrasing and missing connective links. Progression is visible, but referencing could be managed more smoothly to elevate the clarity of the overall argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to the visual data such as 'generation', 'usage', 'consumption', and 'decline'. Less common vocabulary is attempted, such as 'dominating', but this is accompanied by some spelling errors like 'musch', 'prodeucion', 'khw', and 'kwh' capitalization inconsistencies. There are also word-choice and collocation limitations, such as 'These countries tops the usage and production' instead of 'top'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the core data points, but they keep the score at this level due to the presence of noticeable inaccuracies in spelling and word form.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative statements. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('These countries tops', 'countries in mid... has'), missing articles ('at second position', 'lowest among ten is korea'), and poor punctuation spacing around commas and periods. For example, sentences often lack spaces after punctuation marks, and complex structures break down under faulty agreement ('the countries in mid from top 3 to top 9 has musch less generation'). While these errors do not completely obscure meaning, their frequency prevents the use of a wider range of error-free complex structures.
