Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, selecting key data points, and making relevant comparisons. You provide a clear overview at the beginning, identifying China and the United States as the dominant countries and noting the exception of Germany. However, some areas lean towards listing data rather than fully developing comparisons. For instance, in the third paragraph, the consumption figure for China is misstated as 4,099 billion kWh instead of the correct 5,322 billion kWh from the chart. This minor factual inaccuracy prevents the response from reaching a higher band. To elevate this further, ensure all figures are meticulously cross-checked with the visual data and provide deeper comparative analysis between the top tiers and the remaining nations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You effectively group the data into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction and overview, moving to the top two countries, and then grouping the remaining nations. Cohesive devices are used flexibly, such as 'Overall', 'Turning to the details', and 'In contrast', which help guide the reader smoothly through the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately and supports the overall structure. To reach an even higher standard, ensure that referencing and cohesive links are completely seamless without any mechanical feel, ensuring tighter logical connections between the grouped data points in the final body paragraph.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and paraphrasing terms from the prompt, such as 'generation and utilisation of electricity'. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'onsumer' instead of consumer, 'accounted by' instead of accounted for, and 'biilion' instead of billion. Furthermore, 'ultilised' contains a spelling slip. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a Band six level because they reveal inaccuracies in word choice, form, and spelling when attempting less common vocabulary. To achieve a higher band, pay closer attention to spelling and ensure correct collocations and prepositions are used with reporting verbs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to structure sentences with subordinate clauses, such as 'while their consumption stood at...'. There are some errors in grammar, including subject-verb agreement issues in the introduction ('The given bar graph provide' instead of provides) and an awkward structure in the final paragraph ('in Canada, France, Brazil and South Korea produced electricity' where the preposition 'in' is unnecessary). Punctuation and articles are generally handled adequately. These errors rarely impede communication, placing your grammar squarely at this level. To improve, focus on eliminating basic agreement errors and ensure that complex sentence structures remain grammatically sound throughout.
