Student answer (Band 5.5)

The Given horizontal bar chart illustrates the top ten countries for amount of consumption and production of electricity done by them in 2014.

The first ranked country is China whereas the last ranked country is Korean Republic. The production and consumption both are expressed using the term kilo watt hour.

Every country except one has more amount of electricity produced and electricity consumed is lesser than the production of it. Germany which is the only country to have more consumption of electricity rather than more produce.

Russia is the most stable country in the top ten countries beacuse the production is almost equal to the consumption there is a tiny bit difference in that. India and USA have production done in enormously high amount because there is a huge gap between the production and consumption.

In conclusion, the bar chart compares the top ten ranked countries based on its production and consumption of electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response presents an overview of the data and attempts to report some main features and comparisons, which aligns with addressing parts of the task. However, the selection of data is somewhat limited and lacks precision. For example, the student notes that Russia has production almost equal to consumption, but fails to include specific key figures or contrast this effectively with higher-producing nations like China and the United States. Furthermore, there are minor inaccuracies in interpreting the chart, such as stating that India and the USA have production done in an enormously high amount because of a huge gap, which misinterprets the scale and actual numerical relationships shown in the visual data. To reach a higher level, the response needs to select more key data points accurately and provide a more thorough, well-supported comparison across the countries.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, making it generally readable. Paragraphing is utilized, though some paragraphs are quite brief and lack internal development. Cohesive devices are attempted, such as 'whereas', 'Every country except one', and 'In conclusion', but referencing and linking can be mechanical or slightly awkward, as seen in phrases like 'done by them' and 'more consumption of electricity rather than more produce'. There is a clear attempt to logically sequence ideas by contrasting countries, but the progression between sentences could be smoother and more sophisticated to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to discuss production and consumption. However, there are noticeable limitations and awkward word choices, such as 'amount of consumption and production of electricity done by them', 'produce' used as a noun, and 'tiny bit difference'. Spelling and word formation errors, such as 'beacuse' and 'kilo watt hour', occur. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are constrained by inaccuracy and unnatural collocations. To improve, the student should focus on precise phrasing, accurate word forms, and natural academic collocations rather than relying on repetitive or conversational terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic complex forms that frequently contain errors. There are frequent mistakes in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('the last ranked country is Korean Republic'), incorrect prepositions ('difference in that'), and awkward passive constructions ('production and consumption both are expressed'). Sentences often lack smooth coordination, and frequent grammatical slips cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to increase control over complex grammatical structures, ensure correct subject-verb agreement, and reduce the frequency of basic errors.
