Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the chart, including the top producers and consumers like China and the United States, as well as lower-ranking countries like South Korea. An appropriate overview is provided, highlighting the extremes at both ends of the rankings. However, some ideas are under-developed or presented as loose groupings rather than detailed comparisons, such as grouping multiple countries together with broad numerical ranges (e.g., Japan, India, Canada, France and Brazil). To move to a higher band, the response would need to select key data points more precisely and develop comparisons across categories with greater clarity and depth.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear structure that separates the overview, production data, and consumption data into distinct paragraphs. Progression is generally maintained throughout the response. However, cohesion is at times mechanical and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as repetitive sentence openings ('It can be seen that...', 'In consumption again...'). Additionally, logical transitions between grouped countries could be smoother. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing between sentences is managed with greater fluidity rather than relying on formulaic patterns.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing basic terms related to data reporting such as 'production', 'consumption', and 'highest'. The writer makes some attempts at less common vocabulary, but these are often accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and phrasing, such as 'Electricy' instead of 'electricity' and awkward expressions like 'highest number of production'. Spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable throughout the text, though they do not severely impede communication. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to expand their lexical range, demonstrate better control of word forms and collocations, and eliminate basic spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to structure sentences around the data. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'China both Consumption and Production is highest', 'United States and Russia is top 3 countries'), article usage (e.g., missing articles before 'top 10 countries', 'graph'), and prepositions. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they persist throughout the text and restrict the variety of error-free structures. Improving control over basic grammatical structures, subject-verb agreement, and article placement is necessary to elevate this criterion.
