Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, and additionally fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words. While the student attempts to summarise the chart by identifying China as the highest producer and consumer and Korea as the lowest, the selection of data is erratic and incomplete. Key information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, and the details selected are under-developed. For instance, the writer lists several figures in parentheses without fully explaining or contextualising them, such as for Canada, Brazil, and France. To achieve a higher band, the response must meet the word count requirement and present a clearer, more thorough overview of the main trends and significant comparisons across the ten countries.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organisation in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The paragraphing is weak, with the text clumped into short, blocky paragraphs that do not logically group the information. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as 'secondly United State', 'thirdly Russia', and 'At the last of table'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, for example when jumping between countries without adequate transitional phrases. To improve, the writer should use a more sophisticated range of cohesive devices to link ideas smoothly and structure the essay into a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that logically group the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are issues with word choice, word form, and collocation, such as 'highest production and consumption' and 'lowest total in production'. Furthermore, numerical units are either omitted or expressed informally, as seen in phrases like 'average of 800 kwh of both' and 'round about 500 kwh'. To reach a higher band, the student needs to incorporate a wider range of precise vocabulary relating to data reporting, such as verbs of increase and decrease, and ensure proper collocation and accurate spelling throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response features a very limited range of structures, with frequent grammatical errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent issues with article usage ('the china', 'the korea', 'At the last of table'), subject-verb agreement ('the korea is lowest'), and sentence construction, with many sentences lacking main verbs or relying on fragments placed in parentheses, such as '(4099 production 3866 consumption)'. Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic. To improve, the student must work on constructing complete, grammatically sound sentences containing both subjects and verbs, and reduce the frequency of basic errors in articles and prepositions.
