Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing the top countries for electricity production and consumption in 2014, but it only partially covers the task. While some key figures are mentioned, such as China at 5,398 for production and Korea at 485.1, the information is presented in a limited and disjointed manner. The overview required for an Academic Task 1 is missing, as the opening sentences are fragmented and fail to clearly summarise the main trends in the chart. Furthermore, several data groupings are inaccurate or overly vague, such as grouping Russia, India, and Japan near '1200 ratio' when their actual figures vary significantly. Ideas remain under-developed, and the selection of data lacks a clear strategy for making meaningful comparisons across the ten countries.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The overall arrangement of the text is somewhat disjointed, and information lacks a clear progression. Paragraphing is poorly handled, with awkward groupings of sentences that do not flow logically from one idea to the next. Cohesive devices are basic, repetitive, or inaccurate, as seen in expressions like 'beside this' and 'alothough the other country contribute'. The referencing of countries and their respective data points is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the intended comparisons. To improve, the response needs a clear introductory summary, distinct paragraphs for different features of the chart, and a wider, more accurate range of transition signals to guide the reader through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent lexical errors that impact the precision of the report. Words are often misused in terms of form, collocation, or spelling, such as 'conusmer', 'canda', 'counclude', and 'relvently'. The writer attempts some less common terms like 'distribution' and 'ratio', but these are often applied incorrectly or awkwardly, such as referring to numerical values as a 'ratio' or 'panel'. There are noticeable spelling errors throughout the text that cause some difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher level, the student needs to use a more precise vocabulary suited to describing statistical data, such as 'generation', 'output', 'consumption', and 'surpass', while ensuring correct spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, relying heavily on simple sentence forms with frequent structural errors. There are constant issues with basic syntax, subject-verb agreement, and word order, as demonstrated in phrases like 'china is rank on number one' and 'country like united state which rank number two'. Punctuation is also poorly managed, with missing capitalisation, run-on sentences, and abrupt breaks within clauses. Attempts at complex sentences are faulty and often distort the meaning. Frequent errors in prepositions and article usage occur throughout the text, creating obstacles for the reader. To improve, the writer must focus on foundational grammar rules, correct verb tenses, and accurate punctuation to construct clear, error-free sentences.
