IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart ranks ten countries according to their production and consumption of electricity in 2014. Overall, most of the countries' electricity production was higher than their consumption, except Germany. Russia mostly had the same level of electricity production and consumption.

The data reveals that china ranked number one in the production and consumption of electricity at 5,398 billion kWh and 5.322 billion kWh, respectively. The United States closely followed with 4,099 billion kWh production and 3,866 billion kWh consumption of electricity. India and Canda's electricity production was significantly higher than their consumption, with 871 billion kWh production compared to 698.8 billion kWh consumption and 618.9 billion kWh production compared to 499.9 billion kWh production, respectively.

In contrast, Russia and Korea.Rep mostly produced enough electricity for their own consumption, as their electricity consumption and production rates were nearly same, with 1.057 billion kWh produced and 1.038 billion kWh consumed and 485.1 billion kWh produced and 449.5 billion kWh consumed, respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of the bar chart and making comparisons, such as noting that China ranked first and that most countries produced more electricity than they consumed. However, some ideas are under-developed or inaccurately supported. For instance, the text claims that Russia mostly had the same level of production and consumption, which applies better to South Korea, while misreporting Canada's consumption figures as production at one point ('499.9 billion kWh production'). To reach a higher band, the student needs to select and report data more accurately without generalising or misstating figures from the visual source.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and an overview. Information is generally organized logically, starting with the top-ranking countries and moving down to comparisons of production versus consumption. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the transition between sentences feels a bit abrupt, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the confusion in the second paragraph regarding Canada's figures. Paragraphing is used, but transitions between the overview and detailed body paragraphs could be smoother. To improve, the student should ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and accurately to guide the reader seamlessly through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'significantly higher', 'respectively', and 'in contrast'. However, there are some word-choice and formatting inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as capitalizing 'china' and misspelling 'Canda' instead of Canada, as well as minor decimal formatting slips (e.g., '5.322 billion' instead of a comma, and confusing Russia with South Korea's traits). These errors do not impede overall communication, but to move up, the student needs to demonstrate greater precision in word choice, spelling, and the mechanical presentation of numerical data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures effectively (e.g., 'The bar chart ranks ten countries according to their production...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing commas in complex lists and occasional awkward phrasing in compound comparisons ('with 871 billion kWh production compared to 698.8 billion kWh consumption and 618.9 billion kWh production compared to 499.9 billion kWh production'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of basic sentences are clear. To achieve a higher band, the writer should aim for a wider variety of complex structures with greater grammatical accuracy and refined punctuation.
