Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar chart illustrates the top ten countries in 2014 for production & consumption of electricity .
At the beginning we can see that China is the highest electricity productor & consumer which is 5,398 billon kwh & 5,322 billon kwh . United States hold the second position followed by 4,099 billon kwh & 3866 billon kwh . Korea remains the second position at the end of the period which accounts for 485.1 billon kwh & 449.5 billon kwh . Russia has almost similar numbers in production & consumption which makes up 1,057 & 1,038 billon kwh. Though korea holds the last position it has also similar numbers in both production & consumption. The numbers of Japan ( 936.2 , 856.7 ) , India( 871 , 698.8 ) , Canada (618.9 , 499.9 ) & France ( 561.2 , 462.9 ) . Germany was the only one who has a bigger in consumption not in production .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to summarise the main features of the chart, the selection of data is incomplete and disorganised. Key details are mentioned, such as China being the highest producer and consumer, but the explanation lacks sufficient development. For instance, the sentence listing the numbers for Japan, India, Canada, and France ("The numbers of Japan ( 936.2 , 856.7 ) , India( 871 , 698.8 ) , Canada (618.9 , 499.9 ) & France ( 561.2 , 462.9 ) .") is incomplete and lacks a main verb, failing to report the data properly. The overview provided at the end ("ovarall we can say that china was the highest one") is extremely brief and simplistic, capturing only a single point rather than a comprehensive summary of the main trends. To reach a higher band, the student must provide a well-developed overview and ensure all selected data points are fully integrated into coherent sentences.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some organisation, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. The paragraphs are extremely short and poorly structured, with the main body consisting of a single, dense block of text and the overview placed at the very end rather than in an introduction or conclusion. Cohesive devices are minimal, inadequate, or repetitive, and referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the confusing statement about Korea remaining 'the second position at the end of the period'. Furthermore, punctuation errors, such as missing spaces before commas and inconsistent use of conjunctions, disrupt the flow. To improve, the student should group related ideas into logical paragraphs, introduce a clear introductory overview, and use a wider range of cohesive devices to link sentences smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common terms like 'productor' (which is incorrect and should be 'producer') and 'consumption', but noticeable errors in word form and choice occur throughout. Spelling and word formation issues, such as 'billon' instead of 'billion' and 'ovarall', cause some difficulty for the reader. The repetition of basic phrasing restricts the range of vocabulary displayed. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to incorporate a wider variety of precise lexical items related to data reporting (such as 'surpass', 'significant proportion', or 'marginal difference') and eliminate basic spelling and word-form errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. The sentences are predominantly simple or poorly formed attempts at complex structures, often lacking essential components like main verbs, as seen in the fragmented listing of figures for Japan, India, Canada, and France. Frequent errors in grammar are present, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'Germany was the only one who has a bigger in consumption') and incorrect prepositional usage ('bigger in consumption'). These errors can cause occasional difficulty for the reader. To progress, the student must focus on constructing complete sentences with correct verb tenses, improving clause coordination, and enhancing overall grammatical accuracy.
