IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart compares the production and consumption of electricity of ten different countries in 2014, measured in kWh.

Overall, it is evident that the China and the US recored the highest consumption and production rate among the given countries, while Korea lagged behind the rest. It is also noticable that seven out of ten given countries generated and consumed electricity under 1,000 billion kWh.

Looking at the details, China produced 5,398 billion kWh electricity and had almost similar consumption rate of 5,322. Futhermore, the United States generated 4,099 billion kWh electricity and consumed 3,866 in 2014. Moreover, Russia electricity production rate was 1,057 and consumed 1,038 billion Kwh, followed by Japan which generated 936.2 and consumed 856.7 in the year 2014. In addition, France, Brazil and Germany production rate was 561.2, 530.7 and 526.6 respectively, and the consumption stood at 462.9, 455.8 and 582.5 in sepuence. Lastly, India and Canada rate was 871 and 618 in terms of production of electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the bar chart, providing an adequate overview that highlights the dominant positions of China and the United States alongside the general grouping of other nations. However, some parts are more fully developed than others; while the top countries are described with specific figures, the details for the remaining countries become somewhat compressed towards the end of the third paragraph, with data points like Canada's consumption being omitted entirely and the production figure truncated. To move to a higher band, the student should ensure all data points mentioned are complete and accurate, and that comparisons are consistently integrated across all reported categories rather than listing figures mechanically.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, beginning with an introduction and overview paragraph, followed by detailed body content. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'Looking at the details', and 'In addition'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in awkward transitional phrasing like 'and the consumption stood at 462.9, 455.8 and 582.5 in sepuence', and referencing is occasionally unclear. Paragraphing is present, but to achieve a higher band, the progression within the body paragraph needs to flow more naturally without relying on repetitive listing structures, and cohesive ties should connect ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying numerical data and comparisons using terms like 'production and consumption of electricity', 'highest consumption', and 'respectively'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary and appropriate reporting verbs, but encounters occasional inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and word form, such as 'recored' instead of 'recorded', 'noticable' instead of 'noticeable', and 'sepuence' instead of 'sequence'. These errors do not impede communication, but to reach a higher band, the writer must demonstrate greater precision in spelling and deploy a wider range of sophisticated, less common lexical items with full accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory phrases effectively. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include missing articles or prepositions in phrases like 'it is evident that the China and the US' and 'Russia electricity production rate', as well as incomplete comparative structures in 'almost similar consumption rate'. While control over basic structures is generally sound, complex sentence attempts occasionally contain slips. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and maintain strict accuracy in articles, possessives, and subject-verb agreement.
