Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response only partially addresses the task requirements. While the student identifies China and the United States as the top producers and consumers, the selection of data is incomplete and heavily skewed. The student includes irrelevant personal commentary and extraneous thoughts, such as 'As I hear some words and I want to say that more heads means more economic development,' which detracts from the formal academic report. Furthermore, the remaining eight countries are lumped together in a vague generalization without specific figures being reported, and the overview is absent. To reach a higher level, the response needs to systematically select and report key features across the chart while maintaining an objective, impersonal tone appropriate for an academic report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization with paragraph breaks, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. The introduction states the chart's topic, but the transition into the body paragraphs feels disjointed due to conversational interjections. Cohesive devices are very basic and sometimes inaccurate, such as 'Firstly,' followed by an unstructured paragraph, and 'But these countries do not compete the China and US.' Referencing between sentences can be unclear, and the mechanical grouping of the final eight countries impedes logical flow. To improve cohesion, the writer should use clearer transitional markers, ensure each paragraph has a distinct and logical focus, and avoid conversational asides.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally hinder communication. The writer relies on basic terminology and makes frequent word choice and collocation errors, such as 'is highly produce and consume electricity' instead of 'produces and consumes a high volume of electricity' and 'China have more advanced, enough machines.' There are also issues with word form, such as 'contribution' used as a noun where a verb or better phrasing is needed ('their contribution is appreciable'). To achieve a higher score, the student needs to incorporate a wider range of less common lexical items accurately, use precise data verbs and nouns, and improve control over word forms and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the response, including subject-verb agreement issues ('China have', 'Russia, Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and Korea is'), missing articles ('the China and US'), and incorrect prepositions ('in electric fields'). Attempts at complex sentences often result in confusion and structural breakdown, such as 'China's electricity production and consumption rate in little more than US because of China have more advanced...'. These frequent errors place a heavy burden on the reader and demonstrate weak control over basic grammatical patterns.
