Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by identifying the general rankings and selecting several key figures, such as China and the United States production and consumption levels. However, the candidate fails to complete the summary as the text cuts off abruptly at the end. Additionally, there are inaccuracies in data reporting, such as stating that China and Russia produce and consume nearly the same amount (while Russia's figures are significantly lower in scale) and misidentifying the chart type as a line graph instead of a bar chart. To achieve a higher band, the response must be fully completed without abrupt endings, accurately report and compare the visual data, and correctly identify the graphic format.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text presents some organisation with basic introductory and body paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression due to the incomplete ending of the response. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or repetitively, such as the frequent reliance on 'in 2014' and 'where' to link clauses. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is left as a single dangling fragment. Referencing and logical connections between sentences are sometimes faulty, making the flow disjointed. To improve, the candidate should ensure complete sentences and paragraphs, use a wider variety of cohesive links naturally, and maintain a clear, logical sequence from introduction to conclusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, containing noticeable errors that reflect a basic range. There are multiple lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'kilo-watt-hour', 'higest', 'ammount', 'respectivily', 'fluctution', and 'germay'. Furthermore, the term 'line graph' is used incorrectly to describe a bar chart. The candidate attempts some less common vocabulary related to data reporting, but inaccurate word forms and spelling slips hinder precision. To move to a higher level, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary, ensure correct spelling of technical terms and country names, and use precise words for describing statistical trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined by basic conjunctions. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, characterized by grammatical errors such as missing articles, subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'China remain', 'USA produce', 'germay they consumed'), and incorrect prepositional use. Punctuation is also weak, with comma splices and missing periods, especially evident where the text trails off incomplete. Frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of accurate complex sentence structures, pay closer attention to verb tenses and agreements, and eliminate basic grammatical slips.
