Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview and covering the main features of electricity production and consumption among the top ten countries in 2014. Selected data points are accurately cited, such as China's peak production of 5,398 billion KWh and the United States' figures. The overview correctly identifies China and the US at the top and Korea, Rep. at the bottom. However, some parts of the response are more fully developed than others; for instance, the grouping of Russia, Japan, and India touches upon relevant comparisons, but the grouping of Brazil, Germany, and South Korea generalizes figures rather than detailing individual key variations. To reach a higher band, the response would need to extend comparisons more consistently across all listed countries and provide a more fully developed selection of data without minor generalisations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response presents an overall coherent arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory statement to an overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing specific data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and grouped details. Cohesive devices are generally present, but referencing and transitions can occasionally feel mechanical or slightly faulty, such as 'Countries further below in the chart was very comparable' and the abrupt shifts between grouped countries. Pronoun referencing and substitution are functional but lack flexibility. To achieve a higher level, the writer needs to employ a wider and more seamless variety of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs to maintain an effortless flow of information.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying numerical data and comparisons using terms like 'dominated', 'peaked', and 'generated'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but there are instances of imprecise word choice and spelling errors, such as 'Koera, Rep.', 'bilion', and 'conusmed'. Collocations are generally acceptable, though phrasing like 'just lagging behind' or 'least electricity generator and user' lacks full naturalness and precision. These minor lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies do not impede communication. To move to the next band, the student should expand their range of less common lexical items, ensure correct spelling, and refine collocations to demonstrate greater precision and stylistic awareness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like subordinate clauses ('while Brazil, Germany and Koera, Rep. were...'). However, control over grammar is somewhat inconsistent, with frequent agreement and structural errors such as 'Countries further below in the chart was', 'Russia, Japan and India was neck to neck', and missing articles or prepositions like 'at bottom of list' and 'in range of'. Punctuation is generally functional, but these recurring grammatical errors persist and restrict the score. To improve this criterion, the writer needs to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, and exercise tighter control over complex grammatical patterns.
