IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar-chart compare bwtween the production and consumption rates of 10 different nations througout the world. The data has been provided for the whole year of 2014 with billion kWh, as unit.

Overall, all countries have higher prodouction rate comparative to their consumption, However, there is an anomally in case of Germany. Moreover, China is the top producer as well as consumer whilst, Korea is the least one.

Production rate for china is 5,398 billion kWh, similarly for United States this figure is 4,099, these two were the top producers. Next, Russia produces up yo 1,057 billion kWh, while for Japan, India and Canada the production rate are 936.2, 871, and 618.9 billion kWh respectively. Furtheremore, for France and Brazil it is 561.2, and 530.7 billion kWh. In the end for Germany and Korea the production was 526.6, and 485.1 billion kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview and reporting key figures from the bar chart regarding electricity production and consumption in 2014. The main features are identified, such as China and the United States leading the rankings and the notable anomaly where Germany's consumption exceeds its production. However, some ideas and details are under-developed or presented as a mechanical listing of numbers without deeper comparison between the two metrics across all nations. Furthermore, there is a minor data transcription slip regarding China's consumption figure, which is incorrectly cited as 53.22 instead of 5,322 billion kWh. To reach higher bands, the response would need to integrate the data more fluidly with insightful comparisons rather than merely listing individual values.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs dedicated to production and consumption. Information flows logically from the global picture down to specific country details. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'Moreover', and 'Similarly', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel mechanical or slightly repetitive, pointing toward the characteristics of a half-band achievement. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of information, but paragraph boundaries and internal links could be managed with greater flexibility and precision to establish a smoother progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate basic trends and figures. There are attempts to incorporate less common vocabulary, such as 'anomally', 'prodouction', and 'comparative', but these reveal issues with word form, spelling, and collocation. For instance, 'prodouction' contains a spelling error, 'comparative' is used instead of the comparative prepositional phrase 'higher production rate compared to', and China's consumption figure contains a significant decimal placement error. These lexical inaccuracies and slips do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the response. To improve, the writer should focus on precise word choices, correct spelling, and accurate numerical transcription.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structure. However, there are noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include punctuation misuse with commas separating subjects and verbs unnecessarily, incorrect prepositions such as 'production rate for china', and agreement issues such as 'production rate are'. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. A stronger performance would require greater control over complex structures, accurate subject-verb agreement, and improved punctuation control.
