IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The chart illustrates the top ten different countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014. Overall, China ranked 1st for the production and consumption. In contrast, republic korea ranked last for the production and consumption of electricity.

China has generated 5,398 billion kWh electricity while consuming 5,322 billion kWh electricity. United States is on the second rank by producing 4,099 billion kWh electricity and consuming almost 3,866 kWh electricity. Russia being on the third place produced 1,057 billion kWh electricity and depleted 1,038 billion kWh which almost close to the electricity created. Japan is on the 4th place, it manufactured electricity to 936.2 billion kWh and spent nearly 856.7 billion kWh, almost near to the produced power.

India generated to 871 billion kWh electricity and drained almost 698.8 billion kWh energy. Canada created 618.9 billion kWh power and consumed nearly 500 billion kWh. France produced 561.2 billion kWh electrical energy while it absorbed 462.9 billion kWh electrical energy. Brazil and Germany produced 530.7 billion kWh and 526.6 billion kWh power, respectively. While Brazil spent 455.8 and germany spent more than it produced. Republic Korea created 485.1 billion kWh electricity and consumed upto 449.5 billion kWh power.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially. While the student provides an overview and selects data from the chart, the reporting tends to read like a mechanical list of individual figures rather than a well-synthesised summary highlighting the main trends and key comparisons. For instance, the student lists almost every single country's specific production and consumption numbers in sequence without grouping data effectively or drawing meaningful overarching comparisons between the two variables. The overview is also quite basic, only noting the highest and lowest ranks without capturing broader patterns in the data, such as the fact that production generally exceeded consumption for most of the listed nations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation with paragraph breaks and basic referencing, but the text lacks a clear overall progression. The essay moves sequentially through the ranks from China down to South Korea, but the internal flow within paragraphs feels mechanical and disjointed. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, relying heavily on phrases like 'is on the second rank', 'being on the third place', and 'is on the 4th place'. Paragraphing is attempted, but grouping related data points together could have been handled much more logically to enhance the overall readability and cohesion of the report.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The lexical range is limited but minimally adequate for describing statistical data. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'depleted', 'drained', and 'absorbed', but these choices are often unnatural or collocationally inappropriate in the context of electricity generation and usage. There are also noticeable word choice and expression errors, such as 'republic korea' instead of the Republic of Korea or South Korea, and writing 'almost 3,866 kWh' while omitting the word 'billion'. These inaccuracies cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the vocabulary score from reaching a higher level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response shows a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or awkward complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with prepositions, verb forms, and articles. Examples include 'China has generated 5,398 billion kWh electricity', where the preposition 'of' is missing, and 'consumed upto 449.5 billion kWh power', where 'upto' should be two words and is used inaccurately for a specific data point. Additionally, capitalization errors such as 'United States' missing its definite article ('The United States') and 'germany' not being capitalised detract from the accuracy of the writing.
