Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response only partially addresses the task requirements. It is important to note that the response is 18 words short of the 150-word minimum, with 8 words copied directly from the prompt excluded from the count. While the student attempts to summarise the main features by mentioning the top and bottom countries (China, the United States, and Korea), the selection of data is somewhat limited and lacks a thorough comparison across the broader dataset. The overview identifies the highest and lowest producers and consumers, but details are underdeveloped. To improve, the student should ensure the minimum word length is met and provide a more comprehensive selection of data points, drawing clearer comparisons between the top nations and the remaining countries.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates some overall organisation with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and a concluding body paragraph. However, there is a lack of clear progression throughout the text, and cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'In constart' and 'ranked tenth which produce and used'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the logical flow between sentences could be significantly strengthened. Referencing and transitional phrases are basic and repetitive. To achieve a higher band, the student should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more accurately and ensure that ideas flow logically from one sentence to the next without abrupt transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items and accurately uses numerical data terms such as 'production', 'consumption', and 'billion kWh'. However, there are notable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'constart' instead of 'contrast', and awkward phrasing like 'ranked second country by generating' and 'produce and used electricity'. These noticeable lexical errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary, pay closer attention to word forms and verb tenses in collocation, and carefully check their spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response exhibits a limited range of sentence structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, these are often faulty, featuring frequent errors in grammar and verb agreement. For example, the student writes 'Korea was ranked last tenth which produce and used electricity', mixing tenses and failing to use correct pluralisation or prepositional patterns. Punctuation and article usage also show frequent inaccuracies that can cause difficulty for the reader. To reach the next level, the student should incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentence structures, ensuring consistent past tense consistency when discussing historical data from 2014, and maintain strict subject-verb agreement.
