Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt only partially and fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, falling short by 13 words (with 11 words copied from the prompt excluded). While the writer attempts to summarise the main features of the chart, the information presented is incomplete, stopping abruptly after discussing Canada and omitting several countries entirely. Furthermore, the overview is confused and lacks clarity, stating that 'there are ten countries whlie, China experienced a significant highest production and consumption rather than other nine.' Data is also misreported or mechanically lifted with errors, such as claiming Russia produced 'just over 1,057bilion KWH and 1,058 bilion KWH' when the chart shows consumption at 1,038 billion. To reach a higher level, the student must write the full required length, provide a clear and accurate overview of the main trends without getting bogged down in minor details, and select key data points systematically across all major categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The essay is divided into short paragraphs, but the logical flow is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and incomplete thoughts. Cohesive devices are used very mechanically or inappropriately, such as 'Initially,' and 'According to the Canada,' which creates confusion rather than guiding the reader smoothly through the data. Referencing is also weak, making it difficult to follow comparisons between countries. To improve, the writer needs to group related data logically, use cohesive links accurately to show relationships and contrasts between figures, and ensure that each paragraph builds naturally upon the last to create a cohesive and readable report.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student relies heavily on simple, repetitive terms related to the prompt and makes noticeable lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'whlie' instead of 'while', 'bilion' instead of 'billion', 'renked' instead of 'ranked', and 'podution' instead of 'production'. There are also frequent word-form and collocation errors, such as 'china produces steadily highest' and 'consumption fall'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth comprehension. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range to include precise terms for describing data trends and differences, and pay closer attention to standard spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at more complex structures that turn out faulty. There are persistent errors in basic grammar, including subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions, and tense usage, such as 'The bar chart illustrates there are ten countries', 'Russia was produced minimum electricity', and 'The india aslo same podution climb'. Punctuation is also poorly handled, with missing commas and improper sentence boundaries that cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student needs to focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb forms for reporting past data, and eliminating frequent structural errors that obscure the meaning.
