Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the top ten countries for the manufacturing and utilization of electricity in 2014.
Overall, China showed the highest generation and expenditure of the electricity whereas Korea and Rep displayed the lowest use and production. However, India, Canada, France, Brazil and Germany highlighted the same stats below the threshold of 1000 kWh for consumption and production of electricity.
In 2014, China and USA experienced the major production around 5,398 billion kWh, 4,099 kWh billion and consumption around 5,322 kWh, 3,866 kWh of electricity respectively. China being the highest in terms of consumption and generation of electricity crossed the USA.
Additionally, stats for electricity consumption and production remained almost similar for Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and Korea/Rep, representing Korea/Rep the lowest manufacturer and consumer of electricity in 2014. Furthermore, Russia, Japan and India constituted nearly identical numbers for the consumption which were 1,057 kWh, 936.2 kWh and 871 kWh and production were 1,038 kWh, 856.7 kWh and 698.8 of electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the chart, including top and bottom countries and some comparisons. However, some parts are treated less fully or contain inaccuracies. For instance, the statement that India, Canada, France, Brazil, and Germany all sat below a threshold of 1000 kWh is inaccurate, as Russia, Japan, and India all exceeded this level according to the provided data. Furthermore, some data points are misreported or awkwardly expressed, such as omitting units for the United States' figures or mixing up production and consumption values in the final paragraph. To reach a higher level, the response needs to present data more accurately and ensure that all comparisons are fully supported by the source text.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at a logical structure, featuring an introductory paragraph, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific data. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore', but their application can feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate general trends from specific figures. However, referencing is occasionally unclear, and the grouping of countries in the body paragraphs lacks complete logical consistency. To improve, the student should ensure smoother transitions between ideas and more precise referencing to guide the reader seamlessly through the data comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'manufacturing', 'utilization', 'generation', and 'expenditure'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'Korea and Rep displayed', 'major production around', and confusing 'billion kWh' unit placements. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical errors prevent the vocabulary from feeling natural or precise. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to use less common vocabulary with greater awareness of style and collocation, avoiding awkward phrasing and ensuring strict accuracy in reporting data terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'China being the highest in terms of consumption... crossed the USA'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles, faulty prepositional phrasing, and mismatched data pairings in comparative structures. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication, and the core meaning remains understandable. To move to a higher level, the student should increase the proportion of error-free sentences, exercise tighter control over complex sentence structures, and ensure greater accuracy in punctuation and syntactic agreements.
