Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the chart by identifying China as the leader and mentioning several other countries, but it only partially addresses the task requirements. The overview provided in the second paragraph is underdeveloped and contains several inaccuracies, such as misidentifying Korea and Germany as the overall least producers and consumers when looking strictly at the rankings provided, or missing key comparative details. Furthermore, there are multiple data transcription and reporting errors throughout the text, such as incorrect decimal placement in figures (e.g., writing '4.099 kWh billion' and '485.1 kWh billion' with confusing units or spacing, and misstating Germany's rank as 9th when it appears out of order in the student's text). While some data points are cited, the lack of a clear, accurate overview and frequent inaccuracies in reporting the figures prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response shows some organization with a basic introductory sentence, an overview attempt, and body paragraphs attempting to group the data. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the information feels disjointed. The sequencing of countries is erratic; for instance, jumping from Korea and China to the United States, then backtracking to Germany, Brazil, and France, and finally discussing Russia, Japan, and India in the last paragraph. Cohesive devices are basic, repetitive, and sometimes misused, such as repetitive transitions ('To begin with', 'In addition') and mechanical referencing. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of data lacks logical flow, which makes the relationships between the countries difficult to follow smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'production', 'consumption', 'generated', and 'secured', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word form, collocation, and unit phrasing (e.g., 'least producer and consumer', 'kWh billion' instead of 'billion kWh'). There are also spelling errors such as 'consimption'. Word choice is frequently repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'ranked', 'production', and 'consumption' without demonstrating flexibility. While the errors do not entirely obscure the general topic, they cause noticeable strain and difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic compound structures. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to awkward phrasing and grammatical errors. There are frequent errors in article usage (e.g., 'the China', 'the Korea', 'the Germany', 'the United states'), subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the consumption of the electricity were low', 'production and consumption... were almost the same'), and prepositions or word order in clauses. Punctuation and decimal formatting are also poorly controlled (e.g., '449.5.kWh billion', '4.099 kWh billion'). These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and reflect a weak grasp of basic grammatical patterns.
