Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart below compares the amount of electricity produced and consumed by ten countries in 2014.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that, China and the United states of America are the top two producing and consuming countries of electricity and France being the lowest among all throughout the year. However, Germany consumed more electricity than it produced in 2014.

China and US were the greatest producers and consumers of electricity in 2014. China produced 5398 billion kWh and consumed approximately equal units (5322 billion kWh). France followed closely with 4099 billion kWh production and 3866b kwh consumption in 2014.

On the other hand, Russia almost produced (1057 b kWh) and consumed (1038b kWh) equal units of electricity. for rest of the counties the production and consumption was noted lower compare to three major countries china, US and Russia. While, Germany however, consumed more electricity then it produced in 2014.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the chart’s main leaders and note the important exception that Germany consumed more than it produced. The figures for China, the United States and Russia are broadly accurate. However, a key comparison is misreported: “France followed closely” with 4,099 and 3,866 billion kWh, but those figures belong to the United States; France’s values are 561.2 and 462.9. France is also not the lowest in both measures, since South Korea has the lowest production and consumption. The response gives little detail about the other countries and does not clearly summarise the overall pattern across the full ranking. Select accurate comparisons and distinguish the United States from France to make the report more complete and reliable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and paragraphs with selected comparisons. The overview also gives the reader a useful starting point by identifying China and the United States as leaders and Germany as an exception. However, the progression is limited because the body moves from China and the United States to France, then Russia, without a clear grouping or consistent comparison. “For rest of the counties” introduces a broad statement rather than developing the data, and the final sentence repeats the Germany point already made in the overview. Some linking expressions, such as “On the other hand” and “While,” do not clearly express the relationships between the information. Group countries by output level or by production-consumption differences, and avoid repeating points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “produced,” “consumed,” “electricity,” and “billion kWh,” so the topic remains clear. There is some variation in phrasing, such as “top two” and “greatest producers and consumers.” However, several choices are imprecise or awkward: “France followed closely” misrepresents the comparison, while “equal units” and “noted lower compare to” are not natural collocations. “Throughout the year” is also unnecessary because the chart presents figures for 2014, not a trend over time. Spelling and capitalisation are inconsistent in “counties,” “china,” and “US.” Use precise comparison language such as “ranked third” or “was considerably lower,” and check country names and units carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast in “However, Germany consumed more electricity than it produced.” Most of the intended meaning can be understood, but errors in sentence construction and punctuation recur. The opening overview has an unnecessary comma after “seen” and an incomplete structure in “and France being the lowest.” The sentence beginning “for rest of the counties” has a lower-case opening, an unclear construction, and a faulty comparison pattern. In “While, Germany however,” the conjunction and adverb are combined awkwardly, and the comma is misplaced. There are also inconsistent sentence starts and punctuation around figures. Build complete sentences with one clear linking structure, and proofread commas, capital letters and comparative forms.
