IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustration compares the generation and usage of electrical energy in ten leading states in 2014.
Overall, most of the countries produced more electricity than their usage except Germany in 2014. China and the United State was leading in consumption and generation of electricity and had more share in total than all other eight leading countries combined.
The United States and China was the biggest producer and consumer of electricity among the ten leading countries in 2014. The consumption and generation of electrical energy of China was around 5400 billion kWh and for the US, the figures were around 4000 kWh. These two countries produced electrical energy more than eight other top countries combined.
Similarly other eight leading states produced electrical energy more than their needs except Germany. In 2014, Germany needed almost 450 billion kWh other than its own production resources to meet its needs. Although China produced more electricity but the United States had more surplus energy in 2014.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: production exceeds consumption in most countries, with Germany as the exception, and China and the United States dominate both measures. The comparison that the two leaders together produced more than the other eight is also relevant. However, some key details are unclear or inaccurate. You say Germany needed “almost 450 billion kWh other than its own production” to meet demand, but consumption was about 583 billion against production of 527 billion, a shortfall of roughly 56 billion. The claim that the United States had a larger surplus than China is also incorrect: China’s production-consumption gap was about 76 billion, compared with about 233 billion for the US, so this comparison is correct; clarify that it refers to the absolute gap. More precise figures and fuller comparisons among the remaining countries would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs developing the main comparisons. The overview helps the reader identify the dominant countries and the general production-consumption pattern. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” and “Although” make relationships between ideas visible. However, the final paragraph repeats the point that most countries produced more than they used, and the progression from the eight other countries to Germany’s shortfall and then the US surplus is not fully smooth. Some references, including “these two countries” and “their needs,” require the reader to infer the precise comparison. Group the figures more systematically and use clearer references to improve cohesion without relying on repeated general statements.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “generation,” “usage,” “consumption,” “produced,” and “surplus energy.” These choices make the subject clear, and phrases such as “leading countries” and “meet its needs” show some flexibility beyond basic chart language. There are, however, several imprecise or unnatural choices: “states” is not the best term for countries, “had more share in total” is unclear, and “production resources” does not accurately describe the amount of electricity generated. “Electrical energy” is repeated often, limiting variety. Aim for precise chart-reporting collocations such as “accounted for,” “output,” and “consumed,” while avoiding phrases that suggest a share when no proportions are given.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the contrast in “Although China produced more electricity…” and the exception introduced by “except Germany.” Meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in agreement and sentence construction remain. For example, “China and the United State was leading” should use a plural verb, and “The consumption and generation … of China was” also has a compound subject requiring “were.” In “the figures were around 4000 kWh,” the unit should match the chart’s billion-kWh scale. The sentence about Germany’s needs is awkwardly constructed and makes the comparison difficult to follow. Check subject-verb agreement, and build comparisons with a clear subject, verb, and production-versus-consumption figures.
