IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the total amount electricity produced and consumed (in billion kWh) by top ten countries in 2014.

Overall, all the mentioned countries had higher electricity production compared to their consumption except Germany and Korea Rep.

As talking about the top ranked nations, It is evident that China was the 1st ranked country with highest amount of electrical energy produced such as 5398 billion kwh and consumed 5322 billion kwh compared to all other countries. Moreover, USA was second in the top ranking and produced 4099 billion kwh of energy and consumed 3866 billion kwh of electricity in that given year. All other countries had very low amount of consumption as well as production of energy compared to these two top ranked countries. Russia stood on the third ranking with proportions of production and consumption were same approximately.

Japan and India stood at 4th and 5th ranking with production and consumption less than even 1000 billion kwh, respectively. Other countries like Canada, France and Brazil had also very less production and consumption of electrical energy. Canada had production of 618.9 billion kwh and consumption of 499.9 billion kwh, while France produced 516.2 billion kwh and consumed 462.9 billion kwh of electrical energy. Brazil stood on the 8th rank with production of 530.7 billion kwh and consumed 455.8 billion kwh. In addition, Germany and Korea were the two unique countries where consumption was higher than production. Germany had produced 526.6 billion kwh and consumed 582.5 billion kwh of total electrical energy. In contrast, Korea only produced 485.1 billion kwh and consumed more as 449.5 billion kwh of energy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You give a relevant overview, identifying China and the United States as the dominant producers and consumers and noting that Germany is an exception to the general pattern of production exceeding consumption. Most figures you report are accurate, including those for China, the United States, Canada, Brazil and Germany. However, the overview says both Germany and Korea had higher consumption, whereas Korea’s production (485.1) exceeded its consumption (449.5). France’s production is also given as 516.2 rather than 561.2, and the statement that Russia’s figures were approximately the same is vague. The response covers the main countries, but some comparisons and details are less fully or accurately presented. Check each figure against the chart and make the overview’s key comparisons precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged in a generally logical order: it begins with an overview, then discusses the two leading countries, the middle-ranked countries and the final group. This makes the main progression easy to follow. Paragraphing also helps separate the overview from the details. However, some linking phrases are mechanical or awkward, such as “As talking about the top ranked nations” and “In addition,” where the relationship between ideas is not especially clear. The final paragraph combines several countries and comparisons, so its focus becomes less controlled. Use straightforward transitions and group the data more deliberately—for example, compare China and the United States together, then summarise the remaining countries by their shared ranges or exceptions. This would make cohesion more natural and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “produced,” “consumed,” “ranked,” “proportions” and “compared to,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary phrasing, such as “electrical energy” and “total amount.” However, some expressions are unnatural or imprecise: “As talking about,” “very low amount,” “very less,” and “consumed more as” do not fit the intended comparisons well. “Proportions” is also not the best word for the electricity figures; “amounts” or “levels” would be clearer. Spelling and presentation of units are inconsistent, including “kwh” rather than the standard “kWh.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than repeating broad phrases such as “amount of energy.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the comparisons remain understandable. For example, the sentence beginning “while France produced…” links two figures, and the response uses clauses with “where” and “compared to.” However, some grammatical errors recur. “The total amount electricity” is missing “of,” while “Russia stood on the third ranking with proportions of production and consumption were same” has an incorrect clause structure and missing article. In “Japan and India stood at 4th and 5th ranking,” the article and preposition pattern are faulty. Capitalisation after a comma is also inconsistent in “nations, It is evident.” Practise accurate comparison structures and article use, and proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
