IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar chart illustrates the production and consumption of electrcity by ten countries in 2014.
Overall, China predicts the highest production and consumption as well. Whereas Korea indicates the least amount of production and consumption. Other countries reamained the same.
To start with, the car chart for China rose sharply for production which is at 5,398 billion kWh and use if electricty remained respectively same. United states made at 4,099 billion kWh and their consumption was 3,866. Russia and Japan were at same phase in both use and make of ecetricty. India produced 871 kWh of electricty. Canada, France, Brazil and Germany shows the same graph while Korea is the country that made least. So, China and United states are the larger producer and consumer of electrcity while other countries reamained relatively less than these two countries. Brazil indicates production at 530 while consumption at 455.8. Canada graph was relatively same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the chart’s subject and give a relevant overview by noting that China leads both measures and Korea is lowest in production. You also report several accurate figures, including China’s production and the United States’ production and consumption. However, the overview is incomplete: Korea is not lowest in consumption, and Germany’s consumption (582.5) exceeds its production (526.6), unlike the general pattern you imply. The statement that “Other countries remained the same” is inaccurate, and several countries are described only vaguely rather than compared using key data. To strengthen the response, give a precise overview of the large gap between the top two countries and the rest, and highlight Germany as the exception.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, with an opening, an overview, and a paragraph of details. Some information is grouped by country, and phrases such as “To start with” and “So” signal movement between points. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the final sentence returns to China and the United States after discussing several other countries, while “Other countries remained the same” does not explain what is being compared. The sequence also moves from China and the United States to Russia and Japan, then to India and several lower-ranked countries without a clear organising principle. Group countries by output level or by notable comparisons, and use clearer links between the overview and supporting details.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “highest,” and “billion kWh,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “predicts the highest,” “the car chart,” “same phase,” and “larger producer.” Repetition of “same” and “graph” also makes the description imprecise. There are noticeable spelling errors, including “electrcity,” “reamained,” and “ecetricty,” which reduce clarity. Aim for precise reporting verbs and comparison language, such as “recorded,” “generated,” “consumed,” “exceeded,” and “was considerably higher than.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast beginning “Whereas” and the sentence comparing China and the United States. However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some relationships unclear. For example, “China predicts the highest production and consumption” has an unsuitable verb pattern, while “United states made at 4,099” lacks a correct sentence structure. Agreement is also inconsistent in “Canada, France, Brazil and Germany shows,” and “use if electricity remained respectively same” is difficult to interpret. Use straightforward, complete clauses with accurate subject–verb agreement, and check articles and verb forms. A wider range will be useful once these basic patterns are controlled.
