Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The given bar chart illustrates the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014 . Electricity is consumed by every possible human being due to one or another reason but where is it more consumed , it is important to know . How much electricity is consumed and produced is essential to know as well.

Further , if we discuss about the bar chart then the country with highest consumption and production is China .The country with least consumption and production is Korea , Rep . The power unit in which these are counted is ( billion kWh) . Korea ,Rep has the production of 485.1 billion kWh and consumption of 449.5 billion kWh . China's production is 5,398 billion kWh and consumption of 5,322 billion kWh .

To conclude , these ten contries consumes billions of kWh of electricity and almost each of them has similar production digits

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies two accurate extremes: China has the highest production and consumption, while Korea has the lowest, and the figures quoted for both countries match the chart. However, it reports very little of the remaining data and gives no meaningful comparisons among the other countries. The claim that “almost each of them has similar production digits” is unclear and does not capture the substantial differences, especially between China and the United States and the other countries. The overview is therefore too limited, and the response does not adequately summarise the chart’s main features. It also falls short of the 150-word minimum: 140 words were counted, with 13 words copied from the task prompt excluded. To improve, include a clearer overview and select several key comparisons, such as Germany’s consumption exceeding its production.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation: the response begins by introducing the chart, moves to selected figures, and ends with a concluding sentence. Simple linking expressions such as “Further” and “To conclude” signal these stages. However, the opening discussion about electricity being used “by every possible human being” does not help describe the chart, and the progression from this general comment to the data is abrupt. The body gives only two country comparisons, while the conclusion repeats a broad claim rather than drawing together the main patterns. Some punctuation spacing also makes the text harder to follow. A more effective structure would use a concise introduction, an overview of the main contrasts, and a body organised around the highest figures and the remaining countries.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses relevant basic terms, including “production,” “consumption,” and “billion kWh,” and the reader can understand which figures are being discussed. However, the vocabulary is limited and some expressions are unsuitable or imprecise for an academic chart summary. “Electricity is consumed by every possible human being” is an awkward, unnecessary generalisation, while “similar production digits” does not clearly describe the data. There are also spelling and form errors, such as “contries,” and inconsistent spacing in country names and units. Aim for precise chart language and avoid conversational or speculative comments. For example, describe values as “output” or “consumption levels,” and use comparisons such as “substantially higher” or “slightly lower” where supported by the figures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response communicates its basic meaning through mostly simple sentence patterns, and it attempts some longer structures, such as “How much electricity is consumed and produced is essential to know as well.” However, the range is limited, and errors in sentence construction and agreement occur. In “these ten contries consumes,” the plural subject requires a plural verb; “if we discuss about the bar chart” also uses an incorrect grammatical pattern, since “discuss” does not take “about” here. Punctuation is inconsistent, with spaces before commas and full stops and missing spaces after some full stops. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, but more accurate sentence patterns and careful proofreading are needed. Practise clear comparisons using structures such as “China produced more electricity than it consumed.”
