IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bar chart illustrate the manufacturing and consumption of electricity in 2014 for top ten countries in the world.
Overall, the electricity is major usage of every country. In the given bar chart China had high production and consumption around the world while production is slightly higher. The Korea, Rep had lowest production and usage of electricity.
The China and United States had dramatically high electricity consumption and production ,but the china had 1300 billion kWh more production than United States. The Russia had almost same rate of electricity production and consumption, while the production was only high by 19 billion kWh.
The counties Japan, India, Canada, Korea, Rep, France and Brazil had production and consumption rate less than 1000 billion kWh. But the production rate for little bit higher range from 80 to 200 billion kWh. Although the only Germany had higher consumption rate. As the production rate is 526.6 billion kWh and consumption rate is 582.5 billion kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: China and the United States are far ahead of the other countries, China leads in both measures, and Germany is the exception where consumption exceeds production. The comparison that China produced about 1,300 billion kWh more than the United States is also broadly accurate, as is the small production-consumption gap for Russia. However, the overview claim that electricity is a “major usage of every country” is unclear and does not describe a chart feature. Some comparisons are underdeveloped: the statement that seven countries are below 1,000 billion kWh does not specify whether this applies to both measures, and the claimed production advantage of 80–200 billion kWh is too broad to represent all of them accurately. Select a few precise comparisons to strengthen the summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to comparisons of the leading countries and then the lower-ranking group. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression within the final paragraph is less clear: several countries are grouped together, followed by a broad production comparison and then Germany, without a clear hierarchy of the most important details. Linking words such as “But” and “Although” do not always express the relationship accurately, and “As the production rate…” is left as a fragment. Improve cohesion by grouping comparisons consistently and using transitions that clearly signal contrast or exception. Clearer references to whether figures concern production or consumption would also help.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “billion kWh,” and “higher,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “manufacturing” is not the best term for electricity generation, “usage” is less precise than “consumption,” and “had dramatically high” is awkward. Repetition of “rate” and “higher” also limits precision. Some expressions, such as “high production and consumption around the world,” are vague rather than clearly describing the figures. Aim for accurate reporting verbs and comparison language, such as “generated,” “consumed,” “exceeded,” and “was substantially higher than,” while checking collocations and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “while” and a clause beginning “Although.” However, errors in sentence formation and grammatical control are frequent enough to make some statements awkward or unclear. For example, “The bar chart illustrate” has subject-verb disagreement, while “The China and United States had” has an unnecessary article and an incorrect verb choice. “Although the only Germany had higher consumption rate” is not a complete, well-formed clause, and “As the production rate is…” is a sentence fragment. There are also inconsistent tense choices when describing 2014 data. Practise complete sentence structures, article use, agreement, and consistent past-tense reporting; these changes will make your comparisons easier to follow.
