IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given bar chart compares the production and consumption of electricity in billion kilowalt by eight nation across the globe in 2014.

Overall, China and United States producedion as well as the ulitisation was significantly higher than the given nations. Germany and korea was in deficit of electricity, while remaining nations had surplus.

China dominated the production with 5398 billion electricity being generated, utilizing 5322 billion. Followed by USA which stood at 4099 billion kwh of electrical power produced, while the consumption stood at 3866 billion. Further, Russia's productiona and consumption were closer with surplus of only 19 billion. Japan also experienced surplus of electricity with around 936 being produced and about 857 being consumed.

Moving further, India generated 871 billion, spent round 700 billion. The figures for Canada, France, and Brazil ranged from 530 to 618 with every country recorded surplus. In contrast, Germany imported electricity more as usage was 582.5 billion kwh while, the production was 526.6 billion. Similarly, Korea consumption was also higher.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main pattern accurately: China and the United States lead both measures by a wide margin, and production exceeds consumption in most countries. The overview also notes Germany’s exception, and the figures for the leading countries and Russia are largely accurate. This gives the response a clear, relevant account of the chart. However, the opening says there are eight nations, although ten are shown, and the statement that both Germany and Korea were in deficit is incorrect: Germany consumed more than it produced, but Korea produced slightly more than it consumed. The lower-ranked countries are grouped broadly rather than compared in detail. More precise coverage of these points would make the summary more complete and better supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, a general overview, and two paragraphs moving from the largest producers to the remaining countries. Sequencing phrases such as “Overall,” “Followed by,” and “Moving further” help guide the reader, and the comparisons are generally easy to follow. Some linking is mechanical or imprecise, however; “Further” and “Moving further” do not clearly signal the relationship between the data. The final paragraph also combines three countries in a broad range before switching to Germany and Korea, so the comparison could be more clearly organised. Use more purposeful transitions and group countries by a meaningful feature, such as whether production exceeds consumption.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “surplus,” “deficit,” and “generated,” and the meaning is usually recoverable. There is some attempt to vary expression, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task: “utilisation” is awkward for electricity consumption, “spent” is not an appropriate substitute for consumed, and “imported electricity” is not established by the chart. Spelling and word-form slips such as “kilowalt,” “ulitisation,” and “productiona” also reduce precision. Aim for accurate, conventional reporting language and check spelling carefully. For example, use “consumed” consistently and describe Germany as having consumption above production rather than inferring imports.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including comparisons with “while” and clauses introduced by “which.” The main relationships between figures are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. In the overview, “China and United States producedion … was” has faulty agreement and sentence construction; “Germany and korea was” also needs plural agreement. Articles are missing in “Followed by USA,” and the sentence beginning “Further, Russia’s production…” contains an awkwardly attached phrase. Punctuation is also inconsistent, as in “while, the production.” Work on subject–verb agreement, complete sentence structure, and punctuation around linking words. More accurate control of these patterns would make the comparisons clearer.
