IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The illustration gives information about the top ten countries for the generation and usage of electricity in 2014. Overall, the first two countries generate and use electricity very high and the next three countries the usage and generating electricity is decreased and the last five countries considerably generated electricity is very small. Electricity output exeeded usage in these countries.
It is quite evident from bar chat that top two countries named as China and United States generate energy is very high upto 5398 and 4099 (billion kWh) in 2014. The next three countries named Russia, Japan, and India consume and produce energy are in the same range which is apriximate to 1057 (billion kWh) to 871 (billion kWh) for the production and 1038 (billion kWh) to 698.8 (billion kWh) for usage of electricity. Furthermore, the next top five countries Canada, France, Brazil, Germany, and korea generated electricity considerably smaller. In general, electricity output exeeded usage in these countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the chart’s subject and give a broad overview: China and the United States lead, while the remaining countries produce much less. You also include several relevant figures for the first five countries. However, some comparisons are unclear or incomplete. For example, “the next three countries” are described as being “in the same range,” although their values vary, and the final five countries are grouped without reporting their figures or distinguishing Germany, whose consumption exceeds its production. The claim that output exceeded usage “in these countries” is inaccurate as a general statement because Germany is the exception. To strengthen the response, select the most important contrasts and report them precisely, including the notable exception.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph with country comparisons. This gives the reader a basic route through the information, and transitions such as “Overall” and “Furthermore” help signal movement between points. However, the overview repeats the claim that production exceeded consumption, and the final sentence repeats it again without adding detail. Some links between ideas are also difficult to follow, particularly the sentence about the “next three countries,” which combines production and consumption figures in a crowded construction. Organise the body around clear comparisons—perhaps the two leaders, the middle group, and the lower-ranked countries—and avoid repeating the same summary.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “generation,” “usage,” “production,” “consumption,” and “electricity output,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range and control are limited by repeated wording and several inaccurate or awkward choices. “Generate and use electricity very high” and “considerably smaller” do not express the comparisons naturally; “bar chat” is also an incorrect form. Spelling errors such as “exeeded,” “apriximate,” and “korea” further reduce accuracy. Aim for precise comparison language and check spelling carefully. For example, use “produced substantially more electricity” rather than “generated electricity considerably smaller,” and vary “usage” with the more standard chart term “consumption.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including an overview with a contrast and a sentence listing several countries. However, some sentence structures are faulty enough to make relationships unclear. For instance, “the first two countries generate and use electricity very high” lacks a grammatical construction for describing the amount, while “the next three countries the usage and generating electricity is decreased” has problems with sentence structure and subject–verb agreement. In “named as China and United States generate energy is very high,” the clauses are not joined correctly. Use complete, controlled patterns such as “China and the United States produced and consumed the most electricity” and “Production declined among the next three countries.”
