IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart illustrates the top ten countries for the production (billion kWh) and consumption (billion kWh) of electricity in 2014.

Overall, China consumed first highest in the rank making our electricity, while USA were the second in all over the countries accounted highest production and consumptions. Korea and Germany are the last two in the rank consumed less productions and consumptions.

Firstly, China accounted 5,398 in production (billion kWh) and 5,322 in consumption (billion kWh), while United States contains 4,099 in production for making electricity and 3,866 in consumption respectively. Therefore, Russia and Japan are very near to making electricity and they are the third and fourth highest in the rank country-list 1,057, 1,038 in Russia and 936.2, 856.7 in japan. However, India highest in production with 871 (billion kWh) and lower in consumption 698.8.

In contrast, Canada and France are very near to make electricity with 618.2, 499.9 and 561.2 in production and 455.8 in consumption. Lastly, Brazil are the eighth rank with 530.7, 455.8 in production and consumption, while the Germany lower in production with 526.6 production and rise steadily to 582.5 consumption. Korea consumed 485.1 in production and 449.5 in consumption respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the chart’s subject and report several key figures, including China and the United States leading production and consumption, and Germany consuming more electricity than it produces. However, the overview is unclear and includes an inaccurate claim: China is described as having the “first highest” consumption, while the chart ranks China first but shows production slightly higher than consumption. The statement that Korea and Germany are the last two in consumption is also misleading, since Germany’s consumption is higher than that of several countries, including Brazil and Korea. Some comparisons are incomplete or misreported, such as the Canada figures. To strengthen the response, give a clear overview of the main pattern and accurately compare the largest producers and consumers, while noting Germany as the exception.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs covering the countries in roughly chart order. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “In contrast,” and “Lastly” help signal movement through the data. However, progression is not consistently clear because some sentences combine several countries and figures without making the comparisons explicit. For example, the Russia and Japan sentence is difficult to follow, and the Canada/France sentence mixes figures in a way that obscures which values belong to each country. “Therefore” does not clearly express the relationship between the preceding and following information. Organise the details into clearer groups, use one sentence per comparison where useful, and make references and linking words reflect the actual relationship between figures.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “accounted,” and “rank,” and the reader can generally identify the countries and measures being discussed. However, several word combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “consumed first highest,” “making our electricity,” and “very near to make electricity.” Repetition of “production” and “consumption” also limits flexibility, while “rise steadily” suggests a change over time that the chart does not show. Aim for accurate reporting verbs and comparison language, such as “ranked first,” “generated,” “used,” and “slightly exceeded.” Check that each chosen expression describes a comparison between two values rather than a trend across time.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses joined with “while” and “although” implied by contrast, and most of the data remains understandable. However, errors are frequent in sentence structure and agreement. Examples include “China consumed first highest in the rank,” “USA were the second,” and “Brazil are the eighth rank”; these constructions make the intended meaning less clear. Articles and prepositions are also often missing or incorrectly used, as in “accounted 5,398 in production” and “the Germany.” Some sentences contain incomplete or awkwardly connected comparisons, particularly the Canada and France sentence. Practise building accurate patterns such as “China produced X and consumed Y,” and check subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries before adding more complex clauses.
