IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The information provided in the given bar graph delineates the production and consumption of electricity of the top ten countires in the year of 2014.
Overall, it is quite evident from the mentioned chart that China was one of the most significant electricity producing and consuming country from the others nations, followed by United States who was the second most popular nation for electricity production. In stark constrast, the rest of eight countries were represented very dramatical change in both electricity production and consumption.
To begin with, China is the most popular country for electricity production of around 5,398 billion kWh and similar consumption of about 5,322 billion kWh. Followed by United States, the production of electricity was slightly less than china of approximately 4,099 billion kWh, while their consumption rate was nearly 3,866 billion kWh. Conversely, Russia eclectricity ratio was dramatically declined compared to China and USA of about 1,057 billion production and roughly 1,038 billion kWh of consumption.
In the subseqent way, countires like Japan and India were about similar electricity used of around 936 and 871 for production and nearly 856 and 698 of consumption reprectively. In addition, Canada accounted for closely 618 for production and under 500 billion kWh for consumption. Similarly, the electricity production of France and Germany are relatively close to 500 billion kWh and consumption was nearly under 500 billion kWh. Ultimately, Brazil and Koreda were the last two countries of the most lesser production and consumption of electricity of approximately 530 and 455 for Brazil and 485 and 449 for Korea. Despite of discussing these countries, China and United Stats were substantially high production and consumption rate of the rest of countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern clearly: China leads both measures, the United States is second, and the remaining countries are much lower. You also include relevant figures for several countries, so the response addresses the chart rather than merely describing it generally. However, some comparisons are inaccurate or too vague. Germany’s consumption (582.5 billion kWh) is higher than its production (526.6), not “under 500,” and it is also higher than the consumption figures for France, Brazil and Korea. The overview’s claim that the other eight countries showed a “dramatic change” is unclear because the chart compares levels, not change over time. To strengthen the report, highlight the broad gap between the top two and the rest, and accurately note Germany as the exception to the general pattern of production exceeding consumption.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs grouping the countries. This gives the reader a coherent overall route through the information, and phrases such as “To begin with” and “In addition” help signal progression. However, some linking expressions are mechanical or do not express the relationship accurately. “In the subseqent way” is unclear, while “Conversely” does not establish a meaningful contrast in the Russia comparison. The final sentence repeats the point about China and the United States rather than adding a new comparison. Improve cohesion by grouping figures according to a clear pattern—such as the two leading countries, then the lower producers—and use concise links that show the actual relationship between the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of vocabulary, including “significant,” “dramatically,” “approximately,” and “accounted for,” and the intended meaning is generally recoverable. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing statistical data: countries are not “popular” for electricity production, and “dramatically change” suggests a change over time that the chart does not show. There are also spelling errors such as “countires,” “constrast,” “subseqent,” and “Koreda,” alongside awkward phrases such as “the most lesser production.” These issues make the report less precise, especially when describing comparisons. Prefer standard chart language such as “generated,” “consumed,” “recorded,” “higher than,” and “the lowest figures,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple statements and longer sentences, including clauses linked with “while” and “who,” which shows some range. Most of the data remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “China was one of the most significant … country” has a number-agreement problem, and “the rest of eight countries were represented very dramatical change” is not a well-formed sentence. In “the production … was slightly less than china,” the comparison structure is incomplete because production should be compared with production. Articles, agreement and sentence construction also need attention in phrases such as “the most lesser production.” Practise building direct comparison sentences and check that subjects, verbs and comparison targets match.
