Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the chart’s subject and give a broad overview, correctly noting China’s clear lead in both production and consumption. You also include some relevant comparisons, such as Japan’s production and consumption figures and the generally lower values for several countries. However, the overview is partly inaccurate: Germany was not among the lowest in consumption, as its figure (582.5) exceeded its production (526.6) and was higher than those of Brazil and Korea. The response also omits key comparisons, especially the large gap between China and the United States and the fact that production exceeds consumption in most countries. Several statements are vague or incomplete, so the main features are only partially reported and supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has paragraphs and uses basic signposting such as “Overall,” “Looking first,” and “Turning to the remaining countries,” which gives it some organisation. However, the progression is not consistently clear. The sentence beginning “Looking first at China’s production…” does not provide figures or complete the comparison before shifting to the United States. The final paragraph groups countries without a clear order, and “these countries” has an uncertain reference. Some linking phrases, including “moreover” and “in contrast,” do not clearly express the relationship between the information. Organise the report around a clear overview followed by meaningful groups or comparisons, and ensure each paragraph develops one connected point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “amount,” and “position,” and the reader can generally understand the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are unnatural or imprecise. “Least popular countries” does not describe electricity figures, while “the largest electricity” and “what they made” are not suitable ways to report production and consumption. “Peak amount” is understandable but less natural than a phrase such as “highest figures.” There is also a spelling error in “electicity.” Use precise chart-reporting language and vary expressions for figures, levels, and differences; this will make comparisons clearer and more appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentence forms and use present-tense reporting language, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “Looking first at China’s production and consumption of the largest electricity, turning to the United States” is a fragment rather than a complete comparison. In “who’s in the second position,” the relative clause is not appropriately formed for a country, and “The amount of production under 1000kwh both them” lacks the grammatical structure needed to express the comparison. Punctuation also disrupts the sentence “Japan produces 936.2. but they consume just 856.7.” Practise complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and check agreement, clause structure, and punctuation.
