IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The chart demonstrates how electricity was produced and consumed by ten dominated nations in 2014. Units are measured in billion kWh.

Overall, it is clear that out of all other countries, China and United States both are the largest producer and consumer of electricity. The lowest was observed in korea republician.

In terms of producing electric energy, China's source of energy released highest electricity with 5,398 billion kWh. The United States of America was second largest producer of electricity, transmittting 4,099 units in 2014. Brazil's and the Germany's production systems accounted almost same amount of electricity with 530.7 and 526.6 billion kWh respectively.

On comparing with production, Consumption of electricity was high only in Germany with 56 units. Whereas, other nations consumption was less than production. Russia's and the China's economy had fully utilized the electricity with lesser units left at about 30. France and the Canada's society consumed 90% of their produced electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the two dominant countries and include several relevant figures, such as China’s production and the similar production totals for Brazil and Germany. However, the overview is incomplete: Korea is described as the lowest, although Germany has the lowest production, while Korea has the lowest consumption. More importantly, the comparison that Germany’s consumption was higher is reported as “56 units,” rather than the actual 582.5 billion kWh, and the claim that France and Canada used 90% of their output is not accurate. The response also omits the substantial gap between the US and the remaining countries. Select the main patterns accurately, distinguish production from consumption, and support comparisons with correct figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for production and consumption. This makes the information reasonably easy to follow, and phrases such as “In terms of” and “On comparing with” signal shifts between points. However, the final paragraph moves abruptly from Germany to Russia and China, then to France and Canada, without a clear organising principle. “Whereas” is also used as a sentence fragment after a full stop, weakening the connection between the comparison and the preceding sentence. Group countries by a meaningful pattern—for example, those with the largest totals and those where consumption exceeds production—and use linking phrases accurately.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “producer,” “consumer,” “accounted,” and “consumed,” and the meaning is generally recoverable. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural choices that reduce precision. “Ten dominated nations” is not an appropriate description of the countries, and “source of energy released highest electricity” is unclear. “Transmittting” is misspelled, while “korea republician” is an incorrect form of the country’s name. Phrases such as “fully utilized the electricity” and “the society consumed” are also awkward in this context. Prefer direct chart language such as “generated,” “consumed,” “recorded,” and “the Republic of Korea,” checking spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the overview clause “it is clear that…” and the comparison beginning “On comparing with production.” Most sentences communicate a basic point, but some grammatical choices are inaccurate or incomplete. In “China and United States both are,” the article and word order are problematic; “The lowest was observed” also lacks a clear noun to identify what was lowest. “Whereas, other nations consumption was less than production” is not a complete, well-formed sentence, and the possessive construction in “nations consumption” needs correction. Aim for complete comparisons, accurate articles and possessives, and clearer sentence patterns, such as “Consumption exceeded production only in Germany, at 582.5 billion kWh.”
