Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar graph displays information on the production and counsumption of electricity among the top ten countries in 2014.

Overall, except for few countries, the amount of electricity generated is relatively higher than that of its consumption. Furthermore, the China and Korea accounted for the maximum and minimum amount of electricity respectively in 2014.

The China generated 5398 billion kWh of electricty but consumed only 5322 billion kWh out of it which is the highest among all the other countries. After China, US produced 4099 billion kWh of energy, while used only 3866 billion KWh. The Russia, Japan, and India accounted for the third, fourth and fifth ranks respectively with the likewise trend as china.

The Canada, France and Brazil stood at the sixth, seventh and eighth positions respectively with a greater amount of production. Among all, Germany was the only country that had a higher amount of utilization (582.5 billion KWh) than its production (526.6 billion KWh). Ultimately, Korea was on the last position with the lowest values for both generation and consumption of electricity among all the other countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main pattern accurately: production exceeds consumption in most countries, China has the highest figures, and Korea has the lowest. The overview and comparisons are supported with relevant data, including the exact figures for China and the United States, and you correctly note Germany as the exception, where consumption is higher than production. The ranking sequence for Russia, Japan, and India is also reported accurately. This gives the response clear coverage of the chart and well-selected comparisons. To make the account more fully developed, quantify or describe the differences for more of the middle-ranked countries, and clarify that China and Korea have the highest and lowest figures in both measures rather than saying they account for the maximum and minimum amount generally.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into a clear introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs that move from the largest producers to the lower-ranked countries. This creates a logical progression, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “After China,” and “Ultimately” help guide the reader. Comparisons are generally grouped sensibly, especially the discussion of China and the United States followed by the remaining countries. Some cohesion is less precise: “with the likewise trend as china” is an awkward reference, and “Among all” does not clearly signal the contrast with Germany. Use more exact links, such as “The same pattern is seen in Russia, Japan and India” and “Germany is the sole exception,” to make relationships between points clearer and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “generated,” “utilization,” and “positions,” and the meaning remains clear. There are also attempts to vary wording rather than repeat the chart labels throughout. However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “maximum and minimum amount” is imprecise for the highest and lowest figures, “with the likewise trend” is not idiomatic, and “stood at the sixth…positions” is awkward. Spelling slips such as “counsumption” and “electricty” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise collocations such as “highest and lowest levels,” “followed the same pattern,” and “ranked sixth,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the contrast in “Germany was the only country that had a higher amount of utilization…”. Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons, and punctuation generally supports readability. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles and sentence construction: “The China generated” and “The Russia” should omit “The,” while “The Canada, France and Brazil stood…” has the same issue. The phrase “with the likewise trend as china” also has a faulty structure, and “the highest among all the other countries” has an unclear comparison reference. Practise article use with country names and build comparisons with complete, parallel structures.
