IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The production and consumptuion of electricity by top 10 countries in 2014 is deleniated by the given bar chart.

Overall, the prima facie glance makes it quite evident that China topped the chart in both production and consumption of electricity closely followed by the USA. Koreas was the country which produced and consumed the least amount of electricity.

Scrutinizing deeper into the obtainable information, China produced 5,398 billion kwh of electricity as against the consumption of 5,322 billion kwh of it. USA produced 4,099 billion kwh electricity and consumed 3,866 billion kwh of it. Korea bottomed the chart with 485.1 billion kwh electricity production and 449.5 billion kwh of consumption of electricity. Japan produced 936.2 billion kwh electricity and consumed 856.7 billion kwh of it. India is at the middle of the table with 871 billion kwh production and 698.8 billion kwh consumption.

Concatenating further, China prodced 5,398 billion kwh of electricity which is more than 5 times the production by Russia. The production and consumption of electricity in the bottom 5 countries of the chart ranged between 449.5 billion kwh and 618.9 billion kwh. All the countries produced electricity more than their consumption, bar Germany which produced almost 56 billion kwh less electricity than it consumed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response identifies the main pattern accurately: China leads both measures, the USA is second, and Korea has the lowest figures. It also reports several figures correctly and highlights the important exception of Germany, whose consumption exceeds production by about 56 billion kWh. The comparison that China’s production was more than five times Russia’s is also supported by the chart. This gives the report a clear overview and relevant supporting detail. However, coverage is selective: Russia, Japan, India and the lowest-ranked countries receive attention, while Canada, France and Brazil are not individually compared, and the broad statement about the “bottom 5” could be more precise. More balanced selection of the middle-ranked countries would make the key features more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and the information generally progresses from the leading countries to lower-ranked figures and then a broader comparison. Linking expressions such as “Overall” and “All the countries” help signal the main points. The paragraphing and overall sequence are clear, but some transitions feel mechanical or overly elaborate: “Scrutinizing deeper into the obtainable information” and “Concatenating further” do not naturally guide the reader through chart data. The final paragraph also shifts between China, the bottom five and Germany without a particularly smooth progression. Use simpler transitions and group comparisons consistently—for example, leaders, middle-ranked countries, then the Germany exception—to strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is adequate vocabulary for describing the chart, including “topped the chart,” “produced,” “consumed,” “ranged between” and “more than 5 times.” The writer also attempts less common expressions such as “prima facie glance” and “Scrutinizing,” showing a willingness to vary language. However, several choices are inaccurate, awkward or too ornate for a concise data report: “delineated by” does not naturally describe what a chart shows, and “Concatenating further” is not an appropriate transition. Spelling errors such as “consumptuion,” “deleniated” and “prodced” also reduce control. Prefer precise, conventional chart language and check spelling; this would make the vocabulary more natural and flexible without sacrificing clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and more complex structures, and several sentences communicate comparisons clearly, such as “China produced … as against the consumption…” and the final contrast with Germany. Most meanings remain understandable, but some grammatical patterns are not fully controlled. For example, “USA produced 4,099 billion kwh electricity” is missing an article or a suitable preposition before “electricity,” while “India is at the middle of the table” shifts into the present tense in a report about 2014. The opening sentence also has an awkward passive construction, and “Koreas was” has incorrect agreement and number. These are some errors rather than barriers to understanding; more consistent past-tense reporting and careful checking of articles, agreement and sentence patterns would improve accuracy.
